1984 Outrage 18 - pricing help?

Postby shortboard » Mon May 16, 2016 2:33 pm

I have a 1984 Outrage 18 that I am preparing to advertise for sale and I would appreciate some suggestions as to her worth. The boat has a 1990 Johnson 140 and a 1992 Majic Tilt trailer. The motor has just been serviced and runs great. This year I had a new water pump installed, tuned up, water fuel separator, plugs, lower end grease, etc. I bought the boat in 2010 and since owning have replaced the tilt/trim, battery, stator, rebuilt the trailer, redone the teak, as well as normal maintenance.

I actually want to downsize to a smaller whaler - either a dauntless 15 or dauntless 13, preferably with a four stroke or yamaha 2 stroke, and would consider some sort of trade. I have an idea of how much to ask for her, but just wanted to get some input from a few of the many knowledgeable members of this forum. Thanks!

That's a nice looking 18. I've seen similar looking ones priced anywhere from $7500 to $12000 for older powered 18s. I'd start high, prime weather coming up and the 18 is an excellent design.

Contact me when you decide to sell. I'm looking for a classic 18' to 20' outrage.

Thanks Maverick, I was thinking along the same lines. I'm going to contact the members here that are interested first, then post it for sale today or tomorrow. Hate to see her go, but want something I can hang from some pier davits.

Sounds good. Some years back I had a 1985 OUTRAGE with 150, and it hung fine on two dock davits (Florida). I also hung a 17 Whaler there as well; no problems.

The 18 is a great boat, and yours really looks clean. Best wishes to you on whatever you decide. I'll see if I can lay hands on a picture of my old 18 on the davits and will email to you. Thanks, Mav

In appraising your Boston Whaler 1984 OUTRAGE 18, I would note these pluses and minuses:

PLUS FACTORS

--no bottom paint; this is a big plus because buyers can clearly see the hull bottom and keel condition;

--wood components in good condition;

--decent trailer in road-worthy condition;

--looks like all OEM components, nothing modified, everything original, particularly the sidelight lamps, which are hard to find or replace;

--sun top looks like it is a Wm. J. Mills & Co. model; I presume it folds down and stows in the bow; if that's right, then this is a plus; otherwise just a neutral factor;

--older two-stroke-cycle engine; the reason I list this as a plus-factor is that it will make the boat more affordable and also allow a buyer to re-power with the engine of his choice; the particular engine is known to be a durable and long-life engine;

--I am not quite certain as I cannot see the console details clearly, but it looks like the boat has the most desirable version of the small center console; the top-mount engine controls sit on a mostly horizontal pad, which is preferred to other console designs where they sit on the sloping surface of the console;

NEUTRAL to NEGATIVE FACTORS

--the seating is dual swivel pilot seats; many prefer the reversible pilot seat (RPS); this may be a matter of preference for buyers, as I am sure some people may prefer the dual seats over the RPS.

I don't have a suggested asking price for you. That will depend on several factors:

--where the boat is located; prices tend to be higher toward the West Coast

--how the boat looks in person and how it runs on the water;

--how fast you want to sell it

I think you won't have any problem getting interest in the boat. Since you don't have a new $14,000 outboard on the transom, you won't be faced with trying to get every last dime out of a recent expense. I don't think you will have a lack of offers on this boat.

Where are you located?
I've got a Dauntless 15 with a newer Honda BF60 (340ish hours) I'm thinking about upgrading....

Wow, you guys are great. Thanks Jimh for all of the really good information. Thanks to Maverick as well. I would like to see your davit setup with an Outrage 18 if you can find the pics. I think my concern is the capacity of the davits - only 1000 lbs. each, which I've been told calculates to approximately 1400 lbs max load. I would prefer to stay around the 1k range to be safe.

I contacted you in May regarding the Outrage. Are you in Michigan? I will be driving back to visit my parents and would like to see the Whaler if you are still selling. I'm in the market for an Outrage.

It looks nice. I bought a nice 1986 Outrage 18 and found it needed a fuel tank and deck recore, 1 year later. It was a well cared for lake boat. If you've checked the tank that would be helpful for a new buyer.

As it sits, it's a clean boat but it's missing a details to get to the top end of the Market Range. It has a fair market asking price range of 8500-9500 with a selling price close to that.

There are a lot of these Outrage out there on the market that are all now facing a major problem. The fuel tanks on fuel tank covers are at the end of their lives and need to be rebuilt and replaced. For anyone buying an older Outrage that has not had this work done, it is now something you have to accept, that in your ownership you will likely be doing those projects.

About a year ago inspected a MINT 100% freshwater, trailer kept and heated garage stored near perfect OEM 18 Outrage with full canvas and lots of options for a friend. He bought the boat for $10,500 and in the last year had the tank fail and upon removing the floor for that decided though it was not completely failed the floor was going to need to be redone sometime and since was out to replace the tank, that was the time to invest in that project too.

These problems are why Montauks are still fetching higher prices than 18's at times, you don't have those problems to worry about.

Thanks WesternFlyer and Jeff for the input. I did have the tank pressure tested in 2010 when I bought the boat, but it would probably be a good idea as you said to do it again to certify the condition of the tank for a prospective buyer. I also did a compression test this weekend on the johnson 140 and got 122, 123, 125 and 125.
