Good morning. I've long been away from this site. Here is an older OUTRAGE 18 project that I'm finally getting around to posting.
To me, the open transom on old Outrage boats to accommodate twins makes for unusable space. The goal of this modification is:
--to add seating,
--to hide rigging, and
--to not cut off the stern of the boat for beach boarding.
First I moved the battery to inside the console, eventually re-powered so the VRO tank went away, and then added hydraulic steering, which all did wonders. Next was figuring out a convertible seat: a bench that would hover off the floor, and take advantage of the rear corners with a folding backrest. I started by patterning the corner curves,(of course they're not symmetrical) mocking up the seat geometry using MDF board, and building a black Starboard frame to support it.

Re: Custom stern seat, 18 Outrage
The seat panel is made of Coosa board, for strength and light weight, trimmed in teak. The folding backrests are teak grates like a swimplatform. and are hinged off the back edge of the seat panel. I used to work with someone who has a mold for a bow filler for an old Whaler that we laid up nonskid patterns from that I glued in place and gelcoated the perimeter. The backrests have inboard spring loaded pull pins that lock in the up and down position, and an outboard barrel bolt that ties them to the gunwale boards. Lastly a center red/white courtesy light and speakers under the corners.
Mission accomplished!

Re: Custom stern seat, 18 Outrage
Your modification is excellent. The concept is really ingenious. The craftsmanship is outstanding. The illustrations are very informative. The result is wonderful. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Re: Custom stern seat, 18 Outrage
I agree with Jim. A beautiful piece of work. It really complements the boat.
If you don't mind, could you describe the connection of the seat support to the hull?
Thank you,
Doug Vazquez

Gravity...just kidding. Aluminum angle brackets to the top of the motor well berm and to the transom. Thanks for the compliments.
Re: Custom stern seat, 18 Outrage
That is beautiful.
Any chance of having you fabricate one for me?
Many thanks,
Ian

I'd like to help you out but don't have the time. Plus my shape patterns from the build didn't survive so I'd have to dismantle my boat to copy them. Thanks for the interest.
Re: Custom stern seat, 18 Outrage
I just stumbled on your post of rear aft bench seating. I am just underway with the reconditioning of my 1989 Outrage 22 to include two rear aft seats like you would see in the new 210 Montauk. Like you, I, too, am using Coosa Board for its light weight, [no] water absorption, and super strength. Additionally I am semi-enclosing my transom for less water back wash. Thanks for sharing your project!

Something I would do differently is putting a thin layer (2 oz.) of glass on the coosa before gelcoat. A hairline crack developed on centerline between the nonskid shapes. Gelcoat needs a little more structure under it. Good luck.

Thank you again for your wise insights, it's appreciated.
I am structurally fiberglassing in the Coosa board to transom, deck, and gunwales for aesthetics and strength.
