Re-do SPORT 13

I own a 1968 or 1969 Boston Whaler SPORT 13 (stencil number 19747). All appeared to be in good shape so I dismantled [the boat] and set it up on saw horses in my garage. The bare hull weighs 252-lbs--I'm not concerned about water intrusion. I am going to paint the boat. I needed to clean up the outside and re-do some older repairs by previous owner.

Picture [below] shows my three tools, a Rigid 5-inch variable speed sander, a Porter Cable 6-inch variable speed sander, and a 10-inch disc on a Makita variable speed. The Porter-Cable 6-inch variable speed sander worked the best with an 80-grit disk. It took three hours to do the outside of the hull. I only used four of the disks on the hull--they held up well.

Next step will be to fill scratches and dings.

Did some filling today and after the first round of taking the filler down with 80 grit I dusted the bottom with a lite coat of cheap black rattle can paint then proceeded with the board sander loaded with 150 wet/dry and a squirt bottle of water with about a teaspoon of liquid dish washer soap. The soap helps the sand paper clean its self ( I think ) and gets rid of any oil that may be left on the surface. The black paint helps hi-lite the scratches and dings I may have missed.

I now have the inside painted. I used the Total Boat Polyurethane and sprayed it using a $19.00 HVLP gun from Harbor Freight. Two coats from 1 qt. of paint that I thinned with about 30% lacquer thinner.

Any updates? Working on mine now. Have a few spots to ground out some crazing, but will be ready to fair and prime soon.

Looking great. I like the classic blue -- nice that Total Boat has the classic Boston Whaler blue as a color choice.

Ive been busy getting ready for winter here, now all the leafs have fallen I can get back to the Whaler. I have all the wood refinished, 7 coats of varnish. The one bench seat was really warped so I got some new Mahogany and rather wish I had replaced all of it noe. The new wood looks brighter, even after sanding and bleaching the old. Will turn the boat back over onto the trailer tomorrow and start putting it back together.

After all the time spent on the bottom of the boat in preparation for paint, I felt some sort of protection was needed. I took a five foot piece if stainless and attached it to the bottom with 1 1/4 " #10 stainless screws. About half of our water here in eastern Washington has Basalt as a bottom, really hard on everything if it is drug across it.

Interesting on the stainless... Been thinking about a keel guard for mine of some sort. Bought the same paint today myself. Nice to see a photo. Was really thinking about rolling and tipping. Have neve used an actual spray gun and am nervous to learn how to on this project. Already have a decent compressor. Also concerned with turning everything in my garage whaler blue overspray. Maybe I could fashion together a makeshift visqueen paint booth? How do people generally handle this? Going to Dremel out and fair my cracks and crazing tomorrow.

Drafter, I bought a roll of contractors plastic 10' X 100' then fastened it to the ceiling in shop with about two foot clearance around the boat. Propped door open at one end of the tent and used a large box fan to suck out the overspray.

I have the wood back in the boat, and added a additional 6" strip of Karri wood to the inside of the transom. After 38 years of holding onto the engine the transom was showing some compression spots. The Karri wood will stop this as well as help distribute the load across the whole transom. Any one have ideas as to the most useful gauges for the helm ? I'm not really interested in a speedometer, but feel a decent fuel gauge that is accurate and possibly a temperature gauge running off the head. Input Please.

Looks great! Did you use the Total Boat paint for everything?

For gauges, I'm looking at doing a tach and water pressure. I found the Kronos series from Faria and they have a nice classic look to them.

Nice idea on the transom. I was considering having a small sheet of stainless cut and attached with 5200 to keep the motor from digging into the fiberglass on the aft side.
The front side has a plate for the screw clamps. I have taped off my stenciled Hull number as well to save it. Thought about having a small brass plaque made with it on there, but liked the originality. I'm torn between the sport and super sport console. I like the horizontal steering of the sport, but feel it's too small and too offset. With the wood location in the hull set for the smaller sport console, how did you attach the "foot" of the wider super sport console with no factory backing plate? I'm sure that has been brought up 1000 times, but I've yet to hear a great answer vs. just screwing it into 1/8 of fiberglass to stay put?
Just wondering if you came up with something else? I may also go with new mahogany throughout. Turns out that "Philippine" mahogany really isn't mahogany at all, but just a marketing name from what I've read.

Yes, Total Boat paint was used throughout, As for the foot on the helm two #10 screws into the floor. It seems to me to be fairly ridged.

In the process of doing the same thing. I read where Jamestown recommended thinning the Total Boat with Zylene. Why did you use lacquer thinner? I sure can't argue with your initial results though. It looks fantastic.

Also, do you intend to stay with the cable steering? Mine didn't have any of the steering components. I'm thinking I would like to recreate the cable steering, but not sure.

I used about two-thirds of the two-part-epoxy primer on the bottom. One quart of the Whaler blue was enough to do the inside. And I have less than a half-quart of the white left from the two quarts I ordered for the bottom.

I used the lacquer thinner because I had it on hand. I would have used xylene if I hadn't had another reducer on hand.

I am waiting on some rocker switches now before I get into the wiring for lamps, gauges, and Garmin.

Ziemer, before you putting on the top coat I went over the whole boat with 400 grit to knock down any bumps and dust particles, then just before starting to apply the top coat I went over the hull with a tack cloth. Yours is looking great.

Thanks! I'm hitting it a little harder. The primer didn't lay down as fly as I would have liked. I also have a few spots I need to add some filler to. I'll get it sanded, filled and prime one more time. Gonna thin the last coat down a little more.

Perfect, yeah don't get in a hurry now, to much time spent in prepping it. When you thin down for the final coat be aware that the primer will have a tendency to sag and run on you.

I would add a voltmeter. It's nice to know your battery condition as well as the charging voltage. A tachometer is a useful tool for dialing-in engine trim and for determining your best propeller and mounting height options.

I had hoped that today I could get the wiring done for the lites and Fish Finder. The closest power supply would be from the ignition switch inside the control box, probably needed cleaning anyway. Opened it up and boy what a mess, I have know idea why the ignition switch and all the wiring wasn't completely gone. So I started peeling the loom back towards the engine, and got to about two feet from the female plug that connects to the engine before I found clean and uncooked wiring. I picked up 15 feet of 6 stand at an auto parts store so tomorrow I will rebuild the loom. And yeah both leads to the battery had also been cooked, so they will also be replaced.

Looks like a very nice job your doing there.
The transom idea with the wood is a good idea, as long as you know its just a temp fix !!! it will not last too long, its a very weak point on these boats due to the stupid way they were built.
the crazy bilge bung idea when they put those in let water in between the two skins and any water in there gets soaked up by the ply transom in between the skins. wood was not soaked in glass before being put in, and no sealer at all around the bilge bungs.
the new paintwork in your boat is very nice now, looks brand new and proper looking colours. great looking boat.
woodwork also looking very nice. hope to see some more pics of it when finished and on the water.

The wiring is finally completed and everything is in place. The last challenge is to secure the cables and wiring in the transom area of the boat.

Guys, be very careful if spraying epoxy or poly. You don't want to be breathing any. At. All.
