1989 OUTRAGE 22: Kicker Installation on Bracket or Transom

Postby RobM » Sat Nov 05, 2016 6:18 pm

For a 1989 Outrage 22 Cuddy, would there be any significant advantage to installing a kicker or auxiliary engine on an auxiliary bracket like a Garelick 71090 or 71091, as opposed to simply installing it as far outboard to port-side as possible on the transom per Boston Whaler guidelines?

The goal is to install an emergency kicker, such as a Yamaha [high-thrust] T9.9, to complement a Yamaha 225 Ox66, in order to gain some peace of mind during Gulf Stream crossings.

I have read John Flook's excellent piece on mounting a T8 to the transom of his boat OUTRE, however while long on installation details, no mention is made of whether his T8 does manage to clear the water fully while underway at normal or high speed cruise.

I am sure the T8 installed on the transom of OUTRÉ can be tilted up so the gear case is out of the water. Dragging the gear case through the water while OUTRE hits over 50-MPH would create lots of spray. I distinctly recall OUTRE going past us this summer making over 50-MPH and I don't recall any spray coming up from the Yamaha T8 auxiliary engine.

I have a 2006 Mercury 15 hp long shaft mounted to the port side of the main 200 Mercury on my Revenge. It is pushed over as far as the thickness of the transom will allow. I have this kicker connected to the main using an E-Z Steer telescoping rod that allows me to steer this motor from the helm and tilt it up. When tilted in the fully up position the skeg drags in the water when getting up onto plane but while on plane it is completely out of the water.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciated. Good to know. Keen to get it right first time, and would like to avoid additional mount.

I also plan to mount a T9.9 Yamaha on my OUTRAGE CUDDY 22.

As my boat has the older design splash well, I plan to have a custom riser built to raise the transom 5" on each side of the engine, then bolt an XL (25") shaft kicker to the riser. The riser will be built strong enough to support the kicker. The whole purpose is to reduce following seas entering the cockpit when trolling offshore. Keeping the kicker power head out of the water is a side benefit, though likely not entirely necessary.

Another option some choose, includes mounting a board or similar on the transom aft edge, and bolt the kicker to this board. Google for a photo of John Martin's Revenge 22 for a view of this option.

MARKO--how about giving the link to the image you want us to see? I don't know how to find the image you are talking about with the instructions you gave. Thanks.
