Postby Malsr » Mon Nov 21, 2016 5:24 pm

Looking for the mold of this nonskid pattern for some deck repairs. Any help as to what number or where to get this pattern would be appreciated. its from a 1985 Super Sport.

There is no existing mold available. The pattern is unique to Boston Whaler.

To reproduce it, you will need to make a mold using one of the kits.

Review this well documented thread from the archive.

Thanks for the reply. I read somewhere that bondo could be used as well. PVA would be needed so it doesn't adhere to the nonskid while making the casting.

No direct match, but try GIBCO FLEX MOLD products.

[AMAZING MOLD PUTTY] looks like it would be worth trying. A recorded presentation [which can be seen by following the link below] shows a non-skid pattern made from a mold. I imagine this is similar to GIBCO FLEX MOLD.

Not to confuse, but how are you going to use the mold? Do you make a section and fit it into place? Or, do you plan to push the mold into wet gel coat?

I have never gotten past this, and cannot see the texture working except in a replacement section to be fiberglassed into place.

I'm restoring a Boston Whaler boat that has the same non-skid which is damaged. Checked with Gibco Flex Mold: they don't have anything.

I went to Michael's and bought flex mold latex. Found a good section of the floor. Sprayed the non-skid with PVA on top of car wax. Taped off an 18-inch by 12-inch section. Applied the latex per the directions; multiple coats. After three coats I put a piece of fiberglass screen on the latex to reinforce the mold. Added three more layers and let it completely dry. Peeled it off and now have a perfect mold of the non skid.

I'll use it in the spring. I plan to rough up the damaged floor section, apply pva to the mold, and apply an even skim coat of Spectrum gel coat to the floor and to the mold and then place it on floor. The trick will be to apply just the right amount of gel coat to the mold but I think it will work.

Reinforcement of the latex mold sounds like a good idea. Thanks for that excellent suggestion. Please let us know how the application works out for you when you attempt to use it.

Thanks for your explanation. I appreciate your time. The flexible mold adds a dimension I had not considered.
Thanks.

I know this is a bit of an old topic, but for anyone who is interested, "BoatworksToday" on YouTube has a few videos on making custom non-skid molds from your existing non-skid for a perfect match. If you search YouTube for "BoatworksToday" and then go to "playlists" there is one titled "Gelcoat Nonskid" and there is a second on "Fiberglass Molds" that may be useful.

I located a two-part series on YouTube which illustrates making a mold and using it to make a repair:
