On my 1984 Montauk I have a wooden platform directly in front of the console that rests on the lip inside below the gunwale. I'm currently using strips of a non-slip material (originally intended to go under rugs on hardwood floors) on each side to protect the gel coat, however this is proving difficult to stay in place and is not the best solution. Does anyone have a recommendation or suggestion of what I could place on each side to protect the gel coat? Ideally it would be something that would adhere and still be removed later without damaging the boat. Here are some photos of what I'm referring to. In the second photo I've added blue painters tape to the area in question that needs to be "protected".

Thin neoprene rubber with an adhesive backing could be used. See

A narrow strip of starboard would work as well. I would attach to the deck, countersinking the screws.

I like Phil's approach: modify the modification (the new deck) rather than the boat.

This is what we did. Not for the bow but it works well.
