Offloading Outrage 18 From Trailer

I need to replace the leaf springs on my trailer and my thoughts are that it would be easier and safer to do this if I offloaded the boat. Launching the boat is not an option given the condition of the springs and the distance to a launch ramp. Searching for a removal system, I found two that look like they may work. They are Scaffoldmart Boatlift Trailer Removal System model BL-2 and Brownell Boatlift System BL-2. Both are capable of removing boats up to 5,000-lbs. Has anyone used or familiar with any of these systems? Any information would be appreciated.

Rather than spending on a "system" you can:

Rent or buy four boat stand brackets, or build them (copy the design of the basic boat stands) using 2x4 lumber for the stern and amidships. You can also use cheap concrete blocks.

Drop the tongue all the way to the ground. Block the stern. Raise the tongue as far as possible. Block Bow.
Rent a car jack and with some blocking, lift the stern and block it. Lift the keel and block amidships.
Once done, pull trailer forward till it interferes with the stands. Re lift and move stands behind trailer frame. Repeat reblocking till trailer is free.

If you remove the boat, you will still have to jack up the trailer to replace the springs. True, there will be less weight on your supporting blocks if you do that, but I think that if you do it appropriately, you can jack up each side of the trailer and place supports under each side behind and in front of the wheels, as well as in the front under the tongue of the trailer. Be sure you are on level ground and that your blocking is appropriate for the weight of the trailer and motor. I did this with the trailer I have under my 17 foot Whaler, replacing the hubs, springs and U-bolts. Just think through all the balance and blocking problems for your situation.

When I needed to take my Montauk off its trailer a few years ago, I found two sturdy trees in the yard slightly further apart than the trailer is wide. I stretched a ratchet strap between the trees about 8-10 feet above the ground and then hung a come-a-long hand winch from the center of the strap. I then used a second strap to connect to the two stern eyes and winched it till I had about 2 ft of play in it making a bridle. I then hooked the come-a-along to the center and lifted the rear of the boat off the trailer. For the front, I used a car jack and some boards. I'd lift the center, pull the trailer forward until I got to a brace, sit it down, reposition the jack and repeat. Once off the trailer I lowered the front on a pile of hay bales gently sat rear on ground where it sat until I was ready to put it back on the trailer..

Pretty simple and cheap operation if you have a hand winch and some heavy duty trucker straps around. Would not recommend with tie down straps. These were rated at like 10,000-lbs and were probably 3.5 to 4-inch wide.

I purchased the Brownell Boat Lift System last spring. Fabulous!!
The reason: I have a 150 Montauk, and several friends have 170 Montauks. At least one of use will need to take the boat off the trailer each spring. So, with safety in mind, I went ahead. In my mind, great decision. A one-man job with no problems.
Where are you located??

BTW, the competitor is made in China. Brownell is here in Massachusetts, and is the standard for boat stands.
I'm not getting under a boat held up by something made with cheap Chinese metal--no way.

I purchased the Brownell system to take my 1982 Outrage 18 off the trailer to strip the bottom paint, apply a barrier coat, and repaint. Fabulous system. Worth every penny. I split the cost with a friend so it wasn't prohibitively expensive. And it makes for very easy [transition] both on and off the trailer.

Did you purchase the Manual Boat Lifting System (http://boatstands.com/product/manual-bo ... ng-system/) or the Foldable Boat Lift System (http://boatstands.com/product/foldable- ... ft-system/)?

I am considering the foldable one for my Outrage 25. I already have the boatstands to support it.

The foldable version is something I'm thinking of. I can get boat off the trailer by myself, but it gets old real quick in and out from under the boat moving the jack.

I use a 20-ton [40,000-lbs] air-over-hydraulic jack and multiple pieces of 2-inch-thick blocks to move past the frame crossmembers.

Brownell recently lowered the price on the foldable.

The manual version looks [useful] as well. But, I contacted Brownell about purchasing without the jack stands--I already have four of their stands-- and they will not offer to sell the kit without stands.

Something I was able to do with my 1999 21 Outrage: I use two of the regular boat stands (25" to 38") and two of the stackable keel stands.

Once off the trailer I use a keel stand to raise the boat and then block with wood and concrete blocks.

The keel stands extend far enough that with some more wood I can use the keel stands on the stern quarters. This allows me to move the two stands used on the corners back and forth as I paint.

I also used Reynolds-brand freezer wrap paper on the wood to keep it from sticking to the paint.

How much does a jack that can lift 40,000 as a working load actual weight itself? I think it would be a fair amount of the weight of the boat!

Hydraulics !

About 40 pounds for a typical Air Over Hydraulic 20 ton bottle jack

porthole, I've pulled my Outrage 25 off a couple of times also, but as you say the lift kit would make it much smoother.

I use wood blocks for the keel, two of their regular stands for the stern, and two more for the bow. I would pull my much smaller Striper 15 off with various different supports but I'm not messing around with the Outrage 25.

Russellbailey,
I've got the Manual Version.
The read jack stands are low enough to get under my 150 Montauk, and the fronts "lock" the support arm in place for safety.
It's pretty slick!

I got the manual model.
