1987 Outrage 20 Remove Seat with Storage Console

Postby fishforfun2 » Sun Jun 04, 2017 5:23 pm

My [1987 Outrage 20] is configured for water skiing. I want to change to fishing and remove a [seat with storage console] to gain more room. [The seat with storage console] seems to be fiberglassed to plywood that is fiberglassed to deck.

How can I remove [the seat with storage console] without ruining it?

That does not read as original for the Outrage 20. The typical seats or leaning posts are fastened to the fuel tank cover and are removable.

Thanks for reply. [What is to be removed is] a console seat and storage box. I looked inside and its glassed to plywood that [unclear] on top of deck.

I removed all the screws that I thought attached [the seat with storage console] to the deck but it won't budge. I may need to get out a saw and just remove the aft portion, but there would still be the plywood attached to deck.

I don't quite know how anyone who can only see an image or two of your boat's unusual seat with storage console could be able to give advice on how to remove it. You are in a much better position than any readers to gain knowledge of how it has been fastened to the deck.

If you have removed the screws which appear to be mechanically fastening this console to the deck, and the console remains firmly attached to the deck, then the most reasonable inference to be made is that in addition to the mechanical fasteners the console was attached to the deck with some sort of adhesive. Apparently the adhesive is not easily seen.

Based on your narrative, my impression is the seat and storage console have been attached to a sheet of plywood. The sheet of plywood has then been attached to the cockpit deck of the Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 20. If the sheet of plywood was adhered to the cockpit deck with a strong adhesive, and the adhesive bond remains strong, separating the plywood sheet from the cockpit deck may be difficult. Some adhesives can form bonds that are stronger than the materials themselves. If an adhesive like that were used, separating the plywood base from the molded deck of the Boston Whaler may be very difficult to accomplish without damage to the plywood base and the boat's deck.

I am also unclear about your main concern. Do you just want to remove the seat and storage console and discard it?

Or, do you want to remove the seat and storage console and preserve it for later use?

That is an aftermarket console and leaning post.

It may be that the leaning post/storage unit is screwed into the fuel tank cover and a bead of sealant was applied around the edge. After removing all the perimeter screws try to pry up along the edge.

I didn't know that it was aftermarket console. I will give it another try to pry it off.
It's been a project that's close to being finished and put up for sale, I'm debating on just leaving it or removing half of it,see trim strip that splits it, but even if I cut it with sawzall it's going to still have plywood raised up on deck.
I was hoping someone has run into this before.
The custom top is also mounted to console and would stay if I cut console in half. Then I would get more fishing room, bait tank, plus storage left in lead post section.
Maybe I could plain the plywood down?

Can you post a photo showing front half of console and one showing the whole boat taken from the port quarter or off the bow?
