Moeller 22 gallon fuel tank and 170 Montauk

Postby Wweez » Sat Aug 12, 2017 12:33 pm

Have there been any problems or regrets concerning [use of the Moeller 22-gallon on-deck fuel] tanks [with 170 MONTAUK boats]?

Two [6-gallon on-deck fuel tanks] have their values, but I am again considering the underseat tank.
Thanks.

There is much discussion of the Moeller 22-gallon or 24-gallon on-deck fuel tank in the archives. Try this search result link:

The many prior comments that are linked in the above search results should be useful for your inquiry

The 22 gallon Moller tank works well. It fit easily and there are no problems with the hose routing. The fuel fill is easy to use, with 5 gallon cans, syphon, or pump nozzle.
I have a weep of fuel at the fuel withdraw fitting to tank gaskets.
I will tighten a bit.
The gauge is visible and even though the needle is not dampened helps a lot.
The hold down straps and lineman loop attachments needed to go so those holes are filled with silicone until they are filled with epoxy this week. New hold downs need to be installed. Loops and straps.

I did not get the tank with the remote fuel sending unit because of money and simplicity.
At this point, I like it.
Pictures and other results will follow.

Moller says the withdrawal tube fitting cannot be tightened, and they will look into a withdrawal tube replacement.

Tomorrow, I will try to contact a human at Moller. Now I have an Fall project

Today Moller suggested I buy a pickup tube from Amazon or West Marine.
For a two week old tank.

So I will return the whole tank to West Marine as defective, and see if the next one leaks. I know they will stand behind it.
Keep you posted.

Has anyone had trouble with the fuel line kinking when the tank if pushed all the way under the seat? I have a 2008 montauk 170 and when replacing the line def noticed some memory where it entered the hull.

Thanks

I can not actually see my fuel line inside the console seat enclosure. I know it is not under the tank. I was so happy that it reached and connected easily, that is where I stopped. I will get a mirror and take a look or picture.
Seems I have heard of contortions getting the fuel line in the right place.
Mine lays over the rear corner and connects easily. Running this line precicely in a perfect geometric pattern has crossed my mind, but got put aside for at least awhile.
