1983 17-footer Rigging Tunnel

Postby Tr3573 » Mon Aug 21, 2017 2:47 pm

The current set up [on a 1983 Boston Whaler 17-foot boat] is a flat top console located on the port side. I wish to remove [the port-side console} and install a center console.

On a MONTAUK 17, is there a tunnel down the center for routing steering, controls, and wiring back to the transom?

The MONTAUK 17 models have a rigging tunnel. The boat you have sounds like it is not a MONTAUK but perhaps another model like a CURRITUCK or a NEWPORT with a side console. If there is a rigging tunnel on the particular 17-foot Boston Whaler boat you have, it should be evident.

Why don't you look at the REFERENCE section article about the 17-foot hull and see if any of the many models illustrated match the boat you have?

By the way, having a console on the PORT side is very strange. I do not recall any models from Boston Whaler being rigged that way. Boston Whaler boats with side consoles seem to ALWAYS have the console on the starboard side. I suspect the boat you have was probably rigged with the console by someone who previously owned it.

If the boat does not have a center cockpit rigging tunnel, you could try to install one. The procedure is rather complicated and will require some skill to accomplish.

Does the 17-foot Boston Whaler boat you have contain a aft cockpit sump area?
