I recently purchased a 1983 MONTAUK and am now in the process of refinishing its wood trim. The MONTAUK has fishing rod holders attached to the front of the helm station. An attached photo [below] shows the upper piece that supports rod holders. One side of the wood has an elongated slot within the wood trim (left); while a similar slot is not present on the right side, but replaced by three cuts into wood instead. Do the three cuts on the right perform any function or is this some type of failed repair or modification?
Thanks

1983 Montauk Wood Trim
Re: 1983 Montauk Wood Trim
That does NOT appear to be an original part for the boat.
The OEM rod holders on the forward face of the console were two sets of 3 holders. The cushion snaps to the ends of the cleats.

Phil
Would you have a photo of the console area in which the cushions are not present so that I can more fully understand where the snaps are located on the wood? My boat did not come with the back and cooler cushion forward of the console nor the bow cushion. Thanks for your help, Barry

Each of the rod holders bolts through the teak block and the nut is on the inside of the console.
The holes in the holder is to access the bolt head.
The 1st and 4th holder (from left) is loose.
The snaps for the cushion are on the side of the teak block.
Here is a photo showing the cushion removed.

Re: 1983 Montauk Wood Trim
Thanks for the additional photo.
The upper and lower teak blocs on my boat consist of only 2 long pieces rather then 4 short ones in the photograph. They rod holders and wood pieces are attached via screws , washers and nuts through the console. All of the 6 rod holders are fixed in a vertical position. What is the purpose for the loose holders in the first and fourth position from the left? Are you aware of a source for the original wood rod holders?

The teak block with the "mods" look like things I've seen in other boats where they are used for fishing. The larger opening would be used to store and easy access to fish hook removal pliers and the 3 slots for fishing knives. That's what comes to mind when I saw that pic.
