1986 Outrage Wood

Postby f8f1 » Sun Feb 18, 2018 8:34 pm

What wood was used for the following pieces in a 1986 OUTRAGE:

From bow to stern
Cooler cleats – 2
Front rod holder supports - 4
Console attachment covers - 2
Console doors – side and main opening – 6 pieces each (2 stiles, 2 rails, spray deflector and louvered door)
Fire extinguisher pocket - 1
gunwale transition pieces – 2
Under gunwale rod holders - 4
Under gunwale rod holder cleats - 4
Stern light standoff – 1
Stern light base – 1

It has been eight years since I varnished the wood on my [1986 OUTRAGE]. We’ve had a very nice February this year and I have had the time to get some winter projects going. I have removed all the wood pieces except the gunwales from the boat. I have a couple of screw holes that have become enlarged over the years that I am going to plug and re-drill.

All the parts listed above are teak on my 1987 Outrage 18 with the exception of the under gunwale rod holders. Mine were missing but think they were teak and teak plywood.

The under-gunwale rod holders on my 1987 REVENGE were made from plywood. I don't recall precisely if it was teak or mahogany plywood.

I agree all the parts seem to be the same wood. How do you tell the difference between Teak and Mahogany?

I went by one of our local wood working stores to pick up some plug cutters. They had some scraps of wood labeled Mahogany. When I brought the piece home and sanded it, the piece looked just like the pieces from my boat.

The Teak plugs I bought at West Marine appear darker with more distinct grain.

I learned wood identification through a life time of carpentry experience. There are some wood imposters out there too.

Then how do you tell the difference between Teak and Mahogany?

I’m a general contractor/carpenter. I am familiar with several species of wood. Different species of Fir, Redwood, Maple, Oak…
Except for my boat, I don’t have much experience with Teak or Mahogany. That’s why I asked for identifying characteristics.

If I have time this week, I will try and give Whaler Customer Service and see if they have any information.

Unfinished teak tends to be brown with a few dark streaks. Freshly sanded it will feel a little oily.

Mahogany tends to be pinkish or red. Kinda the color of Redwood.

I have seen weathered teak and mahogany that looked the same until you cut it.

The wood I have on my 1986 Outrage all appears to be teak, except the under gunwale rod holders. One of the bottom ears on my under gunwale rod holder broke off and with the inside exposed the color has a reddish tint with very straight grain. It looks just like the mahogany I used on a deck a couple years ago. If Boston Whaler switched to a mahogany plywood later it would have been a good move. These under gunwale rod holders are exposed to being kicked by accident, and split, as was mine.

That gunwale rod hold that was split was done by the previous owner...just to be clear!
