18 Outrage Rails, Cleats, Chafing Strips

My just-acquired 1986 Outrage is missing some items I would like to add. Any suggestions on how I might find or have fabricated these parts would be most welcome.

The outer chafing strips by the rear cleats and hawsepipe are missing. I can see where they were installed, but they are missing and the screw holes filled. Mooring lines have created some wear on the rubrail because they are missing. I suppose I could just use stainless bar stock fabricated as replacements, with edges and corners rounded off, if no reproductions or replacements are available.

The boat has no rear rails and there is no sign there ever were any. Is there a source for these rails? Or again, would a custom fabrication be the way to go?

Lastly, the only cleats are the two under the hawsepipe in the stern, and the chock at the bow. I will be docking the boat against a sea wall (with standoffs) and really could use midship cleats. I supposes I could rig bow and stern breast lines, then use the same bow and stern cleats for spring lines, too, but adding midship cleats would really help I think.\

I don't recall that midship cleats were an option but can be added. I too needed to add them to my Outrage 17. Best location is forward of the gunwale cap. Will need to do the "hockey puck" method to provide additional backing for screws.

I learned this from a CW veteran and used it several times.

When adding a screw in a location without backing material, additional support is warranted.

In a foam filled hull, one method to add support is as follows:

Position cleat , mark holes for screws.
Remove cleat. Drill 3/8 holes.
Insert short end of allen wrench in drill. Insert long end into hole and use slow speed
Suck out any foam pieces.
Tape off area to protect gelcoat.
Squirt Gorilla Glue (expanding epoxy) into holes. Wipe off excess. Let cure.
Retap holes for screws.

Thank you Phil! I had forgotten about the extent of the BW knowledge assembled in the reference section. I will be going back and reading it in some detail, and already see that Jim has added a lot, including much on vhf radio. I have no communication device on my "new" whaler and have some decisions to make regarding what radio and antenna. I had been leaning to just a hand-held, but likely will not be comfortable with the limited range.

Of interest, when I registered the 1986 Outrage it is considered an ANTIQUE by the State of Florida. Which means a two year registration only costs $8.50, saving me $100.00. And if I want they will send me an "antique" sticker to apply next to my number.

I will be ordering the chafing strips and cleats shortly. Perhaps someone on the site has the rear rails and I will ask in the MarketPlace. I do recall that hockey puck tip when mounting to a location with no backing. Probably came from LHG or Clark Roberts. Maybe elaelap. So many contributors over the years...

Phil -- That's a great tip. I didn't realize the Gorilla Glue was that durable. It's good to know it will hold screws securely.

As for spring line cleats I'm very happy with the retractable ones I put in my gunwale. I did know where there was wood backing as shown on the schematics found on the owners resources of the Boston Whaler website (or here maybe on this site)

It is nice to be able to put them down when not in use and also nice for fender tie off when not always using a spring-line.
