2016 170 Montauk Fuel Tank Installation

Postby richiemac » Sat May 19, 2018 6:21 pm

[I have a 170 MONTAUK that has a] Mercury 90 FOURSTOKE. My 170 came with two 6.5-gallon tanks with ratcheting fill caps, a fuel level gauge, and hose connector plug. There are also two fuel-demand-valves, one for each tank. There is NO primer bulb.

From West Marine, I purchased a Moeller 22-gallon white on-deck fuel tank.

Is [a Moeller 22-gallon white on-deck fuel tank] the correct tank per EPA rules?

For venting safety?

Since I keep the boat in my garage [I am concerned].

[The Moeller 22-gallon white on-deck fuel tank] has a fuel level sensor and fill tube combination and connector for the fuel hose. The fuel cap does not have the ratchet feature. My first problem is the fuel hose coming out of the pickup tube is directly in the way of the right front tank corner. The hose will be pinched if the tank sits directly over it. This can be solved by either a 90 degree brass barbed connector, and raising tank, or drilling and moving hose over 2 to 3 inches.

The Moeller four-clamp kit does not sit properly on the tank indentations with the tank on the floor.

Thank you in advance [for comments about the tank meeting EPA requirements, the mounting problem, and the hose routing problem]

Richard

For installation help review:

For hold down just use footman loops and a strap fore-and-aft one-third of the width on both sides.

It is recommended you install an OEM branded primer bulb; do not use aftermarket, they are inferior quality.

There isn't a ratcheted cap anymore due to updated fuel venting rules. All non-vented tanks have a cap that has a self contained relief valve set to open at 4-PSI.

If the MOELLER tank is being sold in the USA, it must be compliant with any EPA, USCG, or other federal regulations. If it were not compliant, it would be illegal to sell it. Because you bought the Moeller 22-gallon white on-deck fuel tank from a reputable vendor, West Marine, I am sure the tank you bought would be compliant. That a large national retailer would be selling fuel tanks that did not comply with federal regulations about fuel tanks is unlikely.
