Replacement fuel tank: 1976 Outrage 19

Postby MaeNellie#1 » Sun Jun 03, 2018 10:50 am

On my 1976 Outrage 19 the aluminum fuel tank has corrosion holes, and I have removed. Is there a replacement tank made of plastic available? And where do I find one?

I think I have a 40 gallon tank. I have been told I should used a roto-molded tank.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated so I can get the boat back together and enjoy it for the summer.

I believe most owners of classic Boston Whaler boats replace an old aluminum tank with another aluminum tank. It seems to be difficult to locate an off-the-shelf poly replacement. There may be poly tank fabricators who will make a one-off tank but it won't be inexpensive.

Apparently your aluminum tank has lasted over forty years. It's not unreasonable to expect a replacement aluminum tank to last as long as the original. I recommend your ask the forum members to help you find a replacement aluminum tank source. You may also want to try a site search for "Florida Marine Tank Fabricators".

There are no plastic tanks that will fit into your tank cavity available. You will have to have a new aluminum one made, either Florida Marine or a maker in NJ, can't remember their name-

FLorida Marine Tanks in Henderson SC is the original OEM manufacturer and can fabricate a new tank to factory spec.

If you are in the West, North, South or Mid west, it will be cheaper (saves freight charges) to get a local welder to use your existing tank as a template.

I had a 55-gallon aluminum tank turn into a strainer in my 1989 Raider 19. Before deciding to stay with aluminum, I looked extensively at Moeller and other poly tanks on the market. Some options would have worked in the deck tank cavity, but not without some odd anchoring shenanigans, so I bailed. After pricing a few major aluminum tank fabricators all of whom had the OEM specs on hand, Speedy Tanks Atlantic Coastal Welding was my final choice due to price, great customer service, and additional features that other fabricators did not include in base price. Speedy was nice to work with and provided a superior product.

Good luck!

I’m having fuel tank [problems] on 22 Outrage. The tank was replaced in 2007 by a prior owner. I haven’t found the leak yet, as I’m trying to isolate without raising the floor, but I’m reaching the end of options. I’m also wrestling with replacement options and thinking plastic.

I’m going to get a quote from Moeller on a custom tank to fit the cavity and trying to get the OEM specs.

In the OUTRAGE 22 boat I believe there were two fuel tank sizes: standard was 77-gallons and optional was about 120-gallons.

With modern outboard engines the fuel economy should be better than 2.5-MPG, so a 77-gallon tank would give a range at cruising speed of greater than 175-miles. That seems like a lot of ground to cover between refueling, so I would expect a 77-gallon tank size would be preferable.

A trip of 175-miles at 25-MPH would be seven hours underway—and that’s a long day of boating for me.

I agree. Chuck Bennett says the oem for my year 22 was 70 gallons. But they don’t have the measurements. I surprised no one has the dimensions for either the 70 or 77 gallons versions for an Outrage. I can price any tanks without it and seems my only option is to pull my tank and measure it.

I also need to figure out where the third access port should go as mine only has 2. The sender was next to the filler on my original tank and the later moved them to the center which I presume gives a better gauge of fuel level.
