190 Nantucket Live Well Pump: Repair or Replace

Postby InVision » Mon Jun 04, 2018 10:27 am

The live well pump [on a 2004 190 NANTUCKET] has died. The circuit breaker [trips opens] when turned on. [The circuit] has power so I think [the cause of the circuit breaker faulting] is just [a dead pump]. [Give me] suggestions to replace, to repair, or to get a different pump.

Currently the pump is a ShurFlo Bait Sentry 500. If I replace it I may get a 800 or 1100. The live well seemed to need some more flow.

Thank you

To verify that the cause of the circuit breaker faulting is from the pump, disconnect the pump from the circuit near the pump and retest. A problem in the wiring between the pump and the circuit breaker could also cause the breaker to trip open.

If the pump is the cause, I doubt there is much possibility for repair for the pump. Replacement seems likely the best way to remedy a problem in the pump.

Exactly how I tested it. On the bench it did the same thing. I figure a bait well pump lasting 14 years is good.

Is there something I am overlooking by going to a Bait Sentry 800 instead of the Bait Sentry 500?

Thanks

Also the inline valve is plastic from the bronze thru hull. It does not work, just slips, does not open all the way, and does not close all the way--replacing with a bronze ball valve. Why did Boston Whaler use plastic on thru-hull rigging? All the boats I have owned always used bronze. Pretty cheap from Boston Whaler.

For the record I installed a 800 Bait Sentry and Bronze Shut off valve. I also replaced the 2amp breaker with a Blue Seas 5amp as directions indicated. Got plenty of pressure in the well and my plan is to install a two way valve in line and put a raw water spray hose in engine well.
