1992 Super Sport 13 - Wood Finishing

Postby JohnnyJr » Mon Jun 04, 2018 10:48 pm

Hi, I am new to this forum and new owner of a 1892 Super Sport 13 which has the original 1992 Mercury 40-HP. The wood is in good shape and just needs to be refinished. I noticed references on the forum that Whaler used either teak or mahogany but the wood on my boat has a lighter finish.

Did Whaler switch to a different type of wood prior to going to new fiberglass versions?

Thanks for your help.

Lighter is most likely teak. Both teak and mahogany change colors over time (bleach out) and will look different depending on what was applied to them or is applied to them, such a oil, varnish, varnish with a hue, clear epoxy, and so on.

I believe Whaler was using Honduras mahogany and it would bleach out in the sun and have a light color to it. The mahogany people are most familiar with is African mahogany, and it has a deep brown-rose color to it. Regardless of wood species, refinishing it would make your boat shine and worth the time and effort if prepped properly.
