!986 Outrage 18 Transom Hole Filling

Postby Don SSDD » Mon Aug 06, 2018 10:41 am

My boat had a Humminbird fish finder transducer wire installed via a 3/4 inch hole drilled through the transom a few inches above the water line. What is the recommended way to fill this permanently?
I replaced the transducer and put the wire over the transom instead of through it.

I thought of filling it with either epoxy or 3M 5200 or maybe filling it with a piece of dowel but leaving a space of say 1/4 inch inside and out of the transom and filling the 1/4 inch spaces with epoxy or 5200.

Thanks,
Don

For a hole of 0.75-inch don’t use a dowel; cut a plug or two or three (as needed) from marine plywood or other suitable lumber. Use West Sytem epoxy (from a repair kit foil package) to glue the plugs into the transom and make a watertight seal.

Leave a slight recess below the transom surface so you can fill to flush with the transom with gel coat resin.

Or fill to flush with epoxy mixed with low density filler, sand to fair and flush, then paint the repair to match the hull color.
