1984 Outrage 22 Hull Color

Postby rbedini » Wed Aug 08, 2018 1:00 pm

What Pantone code [will be a good match to the] true color of my Outrage 22 [now said to be a 1985 instead of 1984 as in the thread title]?

It would be helpful if you knew which model year boat you have. Post the HIN.

What sort of PAINT are you using that has a PANTONE hue system?

That sequence is not a HIN. It is more likely the Boston Whaler hull stencil number. It does not encode the year of manufacture. To learn how to distinguish between a stencil number and a HIN, please read the FAQ, which has a comprehensive and carefully written explanation on that topic.

I suggest you read the entire FAQ, but in particular read the portion under the heading at Q2:

Again, I ask: what sort of paint do you plan to use that has its hue identified by PANTONE colors?

According to one knowledgeable participant who works professionally with color, the Boston Whaler gel coat generally know as "Desert Tan" is Pantone color PMS#7527.

Cf.: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/020842.html where more details of how this was determined are provided.

Matching of a existing hull gel coat color to a new top coat material can be done using paint chips. For example, to match to a particular PANTONE color, get a PANTONE color book with sample hues. Compare the many shades of off-while in the PANTONE palette with your actual boat gel coat color. Make the comparison only in natural sunlight, with the sun fairly high in the sky, not at morning or sunset. Do it on a day without heavy overcast.

The ability of an individual person to perceive a proper match in color depends greatly upon the visual acuity of that person's color vision. Some people have acute color sensory perception while others can barely tell green and red apart.
