Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I’m pricing various options to replace [the fuel] tank in my 1979 Outrage 22. I’m searching for tank dimensions.
I’m sure someone has replaced their fuel tank on a 1979 OUTRAGE 22 and has drawings from their tank supplier. Can that someone send me the drawing or the dimensions?
I spoke with Chuck Bennett. I was surprised that whaler doesn’t have the drawings and he suggested FMT would--but unless I purchase the tank first, they won’t share them. I’d rather not pull my deck and fuel tank just to get the measurements. Of course I will have to [remove the existing tank] eventually.
Either 70- or 77-gallon dimensions are fine, as I’m just trying to get estimates.
I’m going to base the estimate on 0.125-inch thick aluminum. Also, I plan to speak with Moeller on a custom tank for a plastic option.
Thanks

This is for a 1989 20 OUTRAGE:
70 L x 22 W x 13.75 D
The tank bottom is V-shaped. [This tank says] 77-gallons on the capacity.
Send me an email and I will send you pictures of the tag, manufacturer, and bottom shape.
My tank is out [of the boat] as we speak. Thanks Mark

That should be the same as the 22 from what I understand. I’ll PM my email.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
Hi
I restored my plastic tank on my 1979 revenge just a few months ago, and did write down the dimensions of both the tank and compartment.
If you would like to see what the cavity looks like, and a few of the modifications I made to the fuel tank cavity, please visit my shutterfly page.
https://garys22revenge.shutterfly.com/
Our boats should be identical below the deck.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
[Describing the shape of the fuel tank] is not that simple. I have just done the tank on my 1983 Outrage [no length or model designation is given; perhaps this author has an older V20 model--jimh]. The tank and locker are a complex shape. There is not a lot of room for error.
The shop that built my replacement tank resulted in a tank that is about 1/2 -inch skinnier, about 3/4-inch shorter, and about 1/2-inch taller. Yep--after I installed it , foamed it, and sealed it, I found out it was a bit too tall.
There is not a much extra space in there. The tank could have been reworked, if I had not installed it. I ended up modifying the [decl] and the access hatch at the fuel inlet area. The cross-section of the tank is not symmetrical. See below; you might want to recheck your dimensions.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I’m considering pulling my tank out to do a complete test and then refoam. I’ve never done that before. Any views on how complex?

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I’m probably more concerned about pulling the rigging and rewiring. At least I can clean up the mess there now and perhaps move the batteries to the console too.
I keep reading that foaming in the tank, while originally done that way, is perhaps not the best. Installing it on a cradle to allow air circulation and adding a drain may be a better approach. What are your plans?

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
Hi
IF you look at this pic, https://garys22revenge.shutterfly.com/pictures/132 and this one of the plastic tank https://garys22revenge.shutterfly.com/pictures/123(70 gallons, originally installed in 1979), the tank cavity is indeed symmetrical.
The dimensions on the drawing are nominal. For example the bottom of the tank cavity is rounded, it does not come to a point, and the sides are not quite vertical, angling out. So while the bottom of the tank cavity is 72 inches long, the top of the tank cavity is actually closer to 74.
Looking at your tank, it is clearly not symmetrical.
As far as foaming in a metal tank, I feel that is a mistake. Allowing the tank to get completely dry, is the most important thing for longevity. I can say that on my plastic tank, the foam - tank interface was wet, and had been in that state for decades. At a minimum I would recommend modifying the tank cavity to allow the occasional removal of water from the tank cavity. I added an fiberglass drain tube (1" id) between the fishlocker and the tank cavity.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
If I end up finding a plastic tank, I would think that foam is an ok option since the plastic won't degrade from the exposure like a metal tank does. Or would you still opt to have a drain or some method to remove water?
Do you have a tag on your tank? I wonder if I can still get a quote from that manufacturer.
Thanks

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
The tank was originally made by Tempo, since bought by Moeller. If you look at my website https://garys22revenge.shutterfly.com/ you can see lots of pics of the tank and cavity. The tank is not available, and has not been manufactured for decades. I did foam mine in.
In the process of looking for a replacement, I did find a couple of Moeller below deck tanks that sort of fit. Your probably best off with an aluminum tank, but if you do try a moeller, please show the results here.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I’m trying to reach [TEMPO or MOELLER]. I’ll tell [TEMPO or MOELLER] there is a potential for at least two tanks and probably others. Maybe we [can] get the cost down on the mold by finding a few participants.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
My memory is that several owners of V models and 1979 Revenge's with plastic tanks have searched for replacements and have not found a plastic tank, either standard or custom was available. This includes Moeller.
All either repaired the damage (fuel inspection plate) or installed an aluminum tank.
I offer this only to save you the fruitless effort.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
Phil is very correct. After a very extensive search of plastic tanks, I only found 1 or 2 that might fit. However none fit exactly, and you would need to modify or create a proper support system for them in the cavity.
Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
[I am surprised] [MOELLER] does’t have the Tempo mold. Anyway, [a new mold] would have to be custom [made]. [I am] trying to figure out what [MOELLER] would charge to make [a new plastic fuel tank from a custom made mold].
[I replaced text for "they" and "it' above as best I could with what I thought made sense. I hope I got the right meaning. Too many "they" and "it" instances to be clear without some actual nouns to refer to.]

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I spoke with Moeller Tanks today. Tooling for a custom tank would run $3,000 to $10,000, Obviously as an individual buyer that is [not a feasible cost to undertake]. However, if there is enough interest from the community, we can figure out a more economical plan leveraging volume purchases. Of course, not everyone needs a new tank at the same time so I need to figure out what the level of interest would be for a plastic 77-gallon tank.
For example, if we had 10 buyers, we would be looking at $900-$1000 per tank. Thanks much better than Florida Marine Tanks quote of $1300 and I would expect a better long term solution.
I may start a new thread to gauge interest but wanted to reply here to those that have been replying to this already.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
According to the proposed plan, if a customer pays $10,000 for the mold to be made, who owns the mold? MOELLER? Or the customer?
Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
That is my question as well. I didn't ask it yet but wanted to gauge interest first. My guess, if I were Moeller, they would "own" the mold. What I'm hoping to be able to demonstrate is some additional demand for this tank and then figure out if Moeller would share in the costs so the initial purchasers aren't stung.. Conversely, it would be nice if a small group paid for the mold then they could get a stipend from follow on purchases. But that is all speculation and I doubt Moeller would go that route. Best to show demand and the size of the community to establish a reasonable Risk/Reward for Moeller.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I should also mention that I did find a 69gallon tank that might fit. I would sacrifice 8 gallons to get a plastic tank for $600. I'm investigating if the fittings can be relocated without a tooling cost. Aside from the molded filler, I think they can put the fittings where needed after they make the tank. We'll see.
Would you give up 8 gallons for a Plastic Tank that is ready-made?

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
Re reducing fuel tank capacity to 69-gallons from 77-gallons:
I don't see this reduction in capacity as a concern. Modern outboard engines get about double the fuel economy of c.1980 engines. The only time I ever get near a full-tank is when I am about to trailer the boat into Canada, where fuel costs are much higher, or heading to a really remote location (like Isle Royale National Park) where fuel is often scarce, old, and expensive. Other than that, I seldom have more than 40-gallons in the tank for my general use of the boat. A 69-gallons tank would be fine.
But for me this is academic: my c.1990 tank looks to be in very good condition. (Knock on wood, or aluminum.)

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
Here is the 69-gallon tank I was referring too.. Assuming the fittings cannot be modified, the filler is pointed the wrong direction to install towards the bow. I guess I could install it with the filler towards the stern will a longer fill hose. The port rigging tunnel would then have a real purpose (I haven't re-checked if the hose can turn under the deck yet..
But my real concern would be having the filler at the stern since under power, I would expect full with a moderately full tank would sit in the filler hose. Technically, with A1 hose and a solid connection this shouldn't be a problem but makes me wonder...
Thoughts?

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I saw that tank when I was looking for options on my tank project. As the tank does not have fuel in it, you could cut the fill out, and replace with an aluminum plate with a fill welded onto it. Does your boat have the original plastic tank in it? You could refurbish it like I did mine.
Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
My boat already had the tank replaced 10 years ago with a new aluminum FMT tank. I’m assuming it replaced an original FMT but who knows.
Moeller is pretty difficult to deal with and they will not modify the fittings which seems like a restrictive manufacturing process and lost opportunity. I haven’t heard from other BW owners contemplating a tank replacement which is surprising given the number of boats out there and the frequency I see folks engaging in this topic. It would be nice to have a small group to share in the mold cost to get a plastic tank that fits an Outrage.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
The asymmetrical fuel tank seen above in Figure 1 may be from an OUTRAGE V20. The fuel tank cavity on the OUTRAGE V20 is indeed asymmetrical. In the REFERENCE article on the OUTRAGE V20 an illustration shows the asymmetry very clearly. Here is the illustration from that article:
Fig. 2. Older OUTRAGE V20 with fuel tank cavity in view showing asymmetrical nature of the tank cavity; originally from the OUTRAGE V20 REFERENCE article. This cavity shape corresponds to the tank shape see above in Figure 1. However, there is no basis to assume that all 77-gallon fuel tanks for all Boston Whaler boats will have this shape.

Re: Outrage 77-gallon Fuel Tank Dimensions
I just replaced my 39 year-old Florida Marine Tank aluminum fuel tank that lived in a V-22 with a Patriot Marine tank custom built from my dimensions. I am sure they can accommodate your asymmetrical space without a problem. Be sure and leave room around the tank for air circulation and installation of some 1/4-inch [thick] neoprene pads. After much research and personal experience replacing rotted tanks in a Grady White, I learned that it is best to glue neoprene pads to the aluminum tank with 3-M200 or 3M4200 before setting them into the space. Any other wedges or braces must be connected using adhesive as well to avoid crevice corrosion, which was the cause of the failure of my tanks.
