Conversion to Center Console from Side Console

Postby kenetz » Mon Sep 03, 2018 1:44 pm

Hello. I'm new to the group.

I have a 1986 17-foot Boston Whaler boat,but it's the sit-down side-console model. I am very interested in turning this into a center console.

[Give me] suggestion and tips. They will welcomed.

Thanks—Ken from Annapolis, Maryland

KEN—Congratulations.

Boston Whaler 16 and 17' models used the same hull but with different interior layouts.

The Montauk is the stand up center console model. There were several side console models including the Newport, Striper and Standard.

My suggestion: don’t try to modify your existing 17-foot Boston Whaler boat into a center console.

If you want a center console MONTAUK 17, sell your boat and buy a MONTAUK 17.

Unless the conversion to a center console was extremely well done, used all original Boston Whaler components, and essentially created a home-made Montauk, I don’t think the modification would be economically justifiable.

A conversion not done well and with non-OEM components could result in a reduced value for your boat.
