2007 170 MONTAUK: Rub Rail Sealant

Postby jheiii » Sun Nov 25, 2018 9:37 am

Hi all. [The rub rail on my 2007 170 MONTAUK] looks like the factory put something [a sealant] there.

What sealant would be recommended to repair [the gaps between the hull and the rub rail on a 2007 Boston Whaler 170 MONTAUK]?

I found this archived reference article which mentions 3M black sealant, but I want a more specific product recommendation as there are many black sealant options.

Thanks.

To discover what sealant brand and type was used by Boston Whaler, I suggest you contact Boston Whaler customer service. I would expect they would be able to tell you the product used when the rub rail was initially applied to the hull.

I suspect that some shrinkage has occurred in the rub rail, and the rub rail has retracted slightly, leaving some of the sealant exposed in the new gap.

I would avoid products noted as adhesive-sealers, like 3M5200 or 3M4200, as they may be too strong and too permanent for this application,

Reply from Whaler:

Boston Whaler uses a black RTV Silicone Sealant from a company called Star Brite Distributing. Their vendor part# for this is 82123. If ordering through a Boston Whaler dealer, the Whaler part# for this is 1039767.

Compare at

http://www.starbrite.com/item/marine-silicone-sealant

This should be an easily-sourced off-the-shelf consumer-grade item.

While the local hardware stores did not have it, fortunately the local Whaler dealer was able to order it. $25 a tube compared to $15 plus shipping online, but the local dealer assured me it will be in my hands tomorrow.
