Mahogany Interior Vendor

Postby biggiefl » Fri Jul 26, 2019 11:32 am

About 2009 I bought a complete interior for my 13-footer. Ten years later the front locker cover is so warped it resembles the long jump ski ramp at the winter Olympics. I need a new front locker hatch.

Who is making replacement wooden components for classic Boston Whaler boats?
On my 24th Whaler. Currently in the stable: 86 18' Outrage, 81 13' Sport(original owner), 87 11' Sport, 69 Squall(for sale cheap).

Walt, aka Blackduck, retired his whaler woodworks.

Bob Latourelle in MA makes reproducing the wood components for Whalers. Owners have recommended him for fully finished and unfinished interior parts, 13/15 interiors and the Sakonnet/Eastport/Nauset consoles. He also does custom work at his shop rate.

He has no website but does run posts on Craigslist. 978-837-8808

Nautical Lumber was the place. Is it still in business?

Bob is located in Haverhill MA and I drive through here several times a weeks and hope to visit his shop soon. I build all my own woodwork, but would be happy to validate his work.

Our Sport 13 is a 1981 model year Whaler. I suspect the interior wood is original. The anchor locker cover is perfectly flat. It is made from solid lumber. I recommend avoiding plywood for boat lumber unless it is European certified marine plywood.

I can't say for certain what their status is today. They moved to a waterfront location, and they began to take on larger boat restoration projects with the hundreds of boats in the nearby marina. Making small wood parts may have been pushed to the back bench or even out the back door.

The history of woodworking artisans as small businessmen is not particularly great.
