Hardware Finish

Postby svsonora » Fri Sep 06, 2019 9:37 am

[Is the finish] chromed [on a combined side lamp or a lifting eye on some unidentified boat]?

[The lamp and lift eye on my boat] are pitted and old.

I was thinking about grinding down and re-polishing the lamp and lifting eye. Then I realized they look like they have a layer of chrome on them.

Are they stainless steel?

Are they bronze?

Replacing them makes sense. They are not cheap.

My parts are chromed bronze.

SURVEY: are there any [chromed bronze parts] that are still shiny.

Should I [replace these parts with] stainless steel aftermarket parts?

[Stainless steel] is easier to keep shiny.

The possibility a chromed bronze part retains a shiny finish will vary with the age of the part, the exposure to weather, and the care provided.

On my 1970 16-foot Whaler, a lot of the chrome plated hardware was starting to look shabby. I had it re-chromed at a local shop, because I believe the original hardware to be of better quality than aftermarket stuff. Please see my post on the old forum here to see the result.
