1985 Guardian 17 Rebuild from Bare Hull

Postby K9medic » Tue Dec 24, 2019 2:36 pm

I know there are a lot of purists on the board. I am not one of them. This [1985 GUARDIAN 17] will be left in the Bahamas, so I’m not worried about perfect. It’s replacing a boat that was damaged during Dorian.

I picked up a console from an IMPACT.

I’m probably going to do a light scuff and a re-paint of appropriate gray paint.

I’ll add a leaning post and most likely a newer engine and call it a day.

I went to the tag office today and got a history on the boat. Its first time being registered in Florida was 1998 by Florida Department of Transportation. The HIN that they had on file is the same one that I have so I'm not sure why it's different than the normal convention.

I'm making a huge assumption that the boat was purchased through the DRMO process in 1998.

If the usual guidelines to interpretation of the hull identification number (HIN) do not produce a clear identification, check with Boston Whaler customer service for advice about the particular hull identification number and its interpretation. The HIN decoding difficulty is incidental and really won't affect your rebuilding of the boat.

What does the acronym DRMO mean? I am not familiar with those letters.

Does DRMO affect the rebuilding of the boat?

Defense Reutilization Marketing Office.

Basically the way that the federal govt. identifies items not needed and allows state and local govt. to purchase before going to auction.

Learning about the prior ownership and use of a boat is always interesting, as it might provide some insight into how the boat came to be in its present stripped-bare condition. Good luck with the rebuilding.
