1980 Newport 17 Transom Replacement

Postby BingoChipMoney » Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:34 am

I have a [1980 NEWPORT 17] with a center console. The boat is in decent condition, but the transom might need to be replaced down the road.

[Seeks a recommendation for a repair shop in the vicinity of Huntington Beach,California] and [an estimate of cost to replace the transom].

I’m located in Huntington Beach, California

Thanks everyone.

Contact your nearest Boston Whaler dealer for a recommended shop to replace the transom on you Boston Whaler 17-foot Unibond hull. The dealer may have his own hull repair shop, but if not, the dealer probably can recommend someone.

Q1: why do you expect the transom to need replacement in the future?

Prior to visiting a dealer, I would suggest you provide us detailed information that leads you to think the transom needs future replacement. A photo or video would help us verify or dismiss this concern.

What is the history of the boat, number of owners, type of use, etc.

[The transom on the 1980 NEWPORT 17] has a good crack that was never fixed by the previous owner. I did a small--but not so great--patch with fiberglass.

When I go around and knock on [the transom] with a hammer, the sound is like there might be some waterlog in the transom.

[The need for a future replacement is] not a huge rush. I just need to know how much [money] to save [for the repair].

Post a photo.

Could be a $300 repair, or a $2,000 repair.

Does the transom flex if you tilt up the motor and lift the skeg?

[The transom on the NEWPORT 17 shows] no flexing at all when I tilt or trim the engine.

I have [used] an epoxy transom replacement product [called SEACAST] on two different boats and have been very satisfied with the results. The cost was $300 to $400 and [the repair] was very easy to to do.

Essentially, you remove the transom cap, core out the old plywood with a chain saw, prepare the epoxy, and pour it in the space. After curing the material is as nearly light as wood and solid as a rock.

SEACAST is popular for this use.

CHIP--I understand that you are able to interpret the sound of a hammer striking the transom as an indicator of water in the wood reinforcement imbedded in the transom. Please explain more about the method you are using to interpret the sound.

Have you verified the method? That is, have you inspected the area of the transom which exhibits the particular hammer strike sound to see if the wood inside the transom is wet, as might be done by drilling an exploratory test hole into the transom and inspecting the wood revealed by the hole for water intrusion?

On transom you have determined to be wet from the sound of the hammer strike, is the wet area above or below the usual waterline of the hull?

ASIDE: If the 1980 17-footer you refer to as a NEWPORT model has a center console, then the boat is no longer a NEWPORT.

Is the center console a Boston Whaler center console?

Was the boat built with the center console by Boston Whaler?

If so, you may have a hybrid of a NEWPORT and a MONTAUK, often called a NEWTAUK. Boston Whaler made a few of these.

If the center console is not a Boston Whaler center console, then perhaps a prior owner modified the boat.

I would really want to see photos before I considered anything close to a transom replacement.

What is the condition of the transom through hull? Are the O rings intact? Again, photos help.

I guess it is a Hybrid then. Ya overthinking things. I didn't know that there was a hybrid type.

But there are some dings and some soft spots along the hull. Feels like whoever did it didn't put enough catalyst to harden it. Kinda gummy to the touch.

Yes PICS SOON. I Know, sorry.

Newtauks are very rare and might be the rarest of all Whalers. There was a dealer in Jacksonville and another somewhere else that would custom order them. According to Whaler the paperwork says they are Newports so impossible to know how many were made but it is believed to be a couple/few dozen in total. Although cool and rare, it does not add anything to price. I had a 1986 from the Jacksonville dealer.
On my 24th Whaler. Currently in the stable: 86 18' Outrage, 81 13' Sport(original owner), 87 11' Sport, 69 Squall(for sale cheap).
