I have a 1974 MONTAUK 17. While I wait for the weather to get warm I have started [refurbishing] the center console and seat.

In regard to the wood that was used to frame out the interior of the seat and console. When removing the wood it was clear that it took on a lot of moisture and was essentially flaking off when I was removing it. I have heard that marine grade plywood is not necessary as the wood will be applied with a heavy amount of fiber glass and resin, and then drill holes will use Loctite. My plan is to apply the new wood with a liquid nails product and then wrap the wood with the glass and resin.

Here are my suggestions:

--if you add an image to your post, give the image a caption.

--if you have a specific question, ask a specific question.

--use WEST System epoxy as an adhesive and means of making wood waterproof.

—if you mention a product give the exact name of the product, not just the general brand name, as you did when you said you planned to use “loctite.”

The brand name “LOCTITE” is used on dozens of products, and most familiarly with adhesives for retaining threaded fasteners. Readers can’t read your mind and know what specific product you are referencing.

What type of loctite will you use to fill the holes in the wood? I probably wouldn’t use liquid nails but would use thickened epoxy. More speedy but it will have a better bond. Liquid nails will hold the wood fine until it’s glassed if you’re on a tight budget.

You mention that you removed the wood backing, but the illustrations you added appear to show the wood backing in place. I don’t know what inference to draw from the illustrations. Please give them captions to explain what is to be illustrated by the images.

One process to consider when filling in the old holes (especially if your not going to remake or reuse the two old factory teak switchplates on the console face) is to cut out all of the dash face, to within one inch of the corners. Replace the whole face with 3/4" plywood. Reglass and repaint. That way you don't end up with the ever slightly visible holes that you filled in with a bunch of different sized wood pieces. Unless you've got a source for that flat black sticky side down material that the factory used for years on the dash face, you'll end up seeing the old holes. BTDT. Labor wise, it might be a whole lot easier.
