1979 SPORT 11 Steering Bracket

Postby Renaveg » Mon Mar 02, 2020 2:52 pm

I recently bought a 1979 SPORT 11. The boat already had a Teleflex cable steering system installed. With the way [the steering] was installed [the engine] couldn't fully trim up [because] the throttle and shift cables were being hit, rubbed and chaffed. Also, [the engine] didn't have full steering to both sides. [The engine] would hit the port side when turned over hard.

I wanted to design a bracket that would eliminate all of these problems.

I'm lucky enough to have a tool room and the knowledge to fabricate these parts, but something similar could be done with less. I got all of my parts from McMaster Carr.

Clamping shaft collar: https://www.mcmaster.com/6157k17
Stainless steel socket-head screws: https://www.mcmaster.com/92185a559

I hope this helps someone out.

[Eight months after thread was started, thread was revived.]

I like what you did here.

Q1: when you tilt the outboard, are the [steering brackets] you made rigid?
Q2: Or do the [steering] brackets follow the outboard being tilted?

It seems your steering bracket would get squished by the outboard steering bracket as it rotates down toward the bracket.

I don't know if the author of this post is still monitoring for replies after eight months.

Based on the very clear illustrations, I do not see any set screws holding the steering bracket extension bars to the tilt tube. It looks like they can rotate. There are clamps that hold the extension bars onto the ends of the tilt tube, but the clamps appear to not prevent the extension bars from being able to rotate around the tilt tube.

ASIDE: I don't recall seeing this post before. I think the method used is quite a clever invention. The illustrations are excellent. And to provide links to a source for all the components was very thoughtful.

I was able to contact Dave (the OP) by email. Dave does confirm that the bracket tilts together with the outboard.

I will review this and probably go this route as it seems the closest to the original steering application.
