2006 Mercury 90EFI FOURSTROKE Air Filter

Postby CapeCodMontauk » Sun Jun 21, 2020 6:38 pm

Give me guidance on replacing what I thought was the air filter or intake silencer on my Montauk's 2006 Mercury 90EFI. After buying one of these

http://www.boats.net/product/mercury/8M ... vjEALw_wcB

I realized it was incorrect. The part I have is an oval, open cylinder maybe 3 x 4 inches and made with a thick cloth-like filter. Filter media looks like it was white when new with black bands at top and bottom-- mine is near black with grime. The filter slides into a larger plastic housing on the front left side of the engine when facing the engine from in the boat.

I have searched the Mercury parts catalog via serial number and model and found nothing that looks like this part.

Thanks for any guidance

Perhaps that c.2006 engine uses a Yamaha powerhead, and the confusion occurs from that mixing of brands. Although usually the 90-HP Yamaha powerhead engines sold as Mercury engines used carburetors, in c.2005 or so there were some Yamaha powerhead Mercury-branded 90-HP four-stroke-power-cycle engines sold with simple electrically controlled fuel injection. There probably weren't too many of them, and that could also account for the mix-up.

Can't hurt to visit your local Mercury dealer's parts desk.
