[The cause of the color mismatch was said to be] “dock rash.”

Please explain what portions of the hull have “paint” and what portions have “gel coat.”

Do you own this boat?

Did you apply the “paint” to the hull?

Did you apply the “gel coat” to the hull?

Do you plan to make further repair yourself?

I do not understand your relationship to the boat, the damage, or any prior repair.

I do not understand what comments you hope to elicit.

It’s a boat I plan to purchase. The repair was dock rash. I just want to know if it’s possible to fix this so it matches to original.

I just want to know if it’s possible to fix this so it matches to original. its a nice boat but poorly handled and taken care of. im just evaluating potential. Ive done minor repair on nicks an scratches on my sold whaler with no problems but this is a 6' x 4' area that was fixed.

To "fix" this, the entire area of new "paint" or "gelcoat" (not the same. see below) is not a DIY.

Gelcoat and paint are completely different materials. If the repaired area is paint, it will need to be completely removed and matched gelcoat will need to be sprayed. To get visual consistency, the entire outside of the hull, if this is the area in the photo, from the waterline up to the gunwale should be resprayed.

A professional would charge ~$1000-$2000, or more to do this type of work with no guarantee it will be 100% color match to the interior.

I would not consider this boat for purchase regardless of price. The failure to properly match the paint or gelcoat is, to me, a sign of the quality, or lack of it, of the repair.

If cheap enough...wrap it!

Just like a car, they wrap boats. You see many fishing tournament boats wrapped with their team name/logo and a mural. Race boats do it. It is vinyl like you see on commercial vans, etc. The boat would have to be really cheap compared to a good specimen because it will probably cost a couple grand to do it.

Funny, my wife suggested the same thing. Didn’t call it wrap though. I think this could get to be a pretty expensive proposition. Thanks

Take $5,000 off the asking price in your offer to purchase just for the trouble of fixing the shoddy work. If there is more shoddy work in other parts of the boat, take off a few thousand more for each possible repair.

Or, find a boat in better condition. Unless you like working on boats more than you like being out on the water in boats, don’t buy a boat that needs a lot of work just to save a thousand dollars.
