Red Dot Hull

Postby 777AIA » Mon Aug 24, 2020 12:58 pm

I have a 1986 SUPER SPORT 15 that I have owned for over 30 years. I have followed [continuouswave.com] for years.

Tell me about the red lucite dot behind my Whaler logo?

I don't see it on anybody else's boat.

I am getting ready to restore this winter, and am trying to be careful about this dot. But I don't know what it’s made of, or why I have one and nobody else does.

Feedback appreciated.

The red dot designates your Boston Whaler has the "Workboat Specifications" option . Listed in the 1986 Boston Whaler "Boat Prices and Specifications" booklet as option number 15-0480-00. A $773.00 option in 1986. On a 15' boat, "Workboat Specifications " adds 90 pounds more glass and resin to the boat.

Information about a Red Dot Hull is given in the Frequently Asked Question answers. See

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q2

The dot is gel coat resin.

The rub rail shown above is not OEM.

The Boston Whaler decal looks crooked.

Two problems to remedy in the restoration.

What engine do you have? That waterline is really high for a 15'.

I think that hull is fairly rare. I'd bet not many 15-footers were ordered with workboat specs.

No doubt Don....I have NEVER seen a red dot 15". My concern is the waterline but not a concern with the correct answer from the owner.

I am not clear what particular advantage would accrue to having the 15-foot hull with heavier lay-up for a typical recreational boater. I owned a 1976 15-footer, one of the first hulls made, and it was quite light. I believe that the hull weight was noted as increasing from the earliest production hulls after a few years. Perhaps a heavier layup was used on those later models.

There was never any particular reason to want the hull layup to be heavier or to be workboat specification that I could see. My old 1976 boat is now 44-years-old. It's hull is still in perfect condition.

The non OEM-rubrail suggests perhaps the boat under discussion here has seen some hard use that damaged the original rub rail. Maybe the workboat layup was a good choice for its initial owner.

I would have thought the commercial hull would add more than 90 lbs, my 18 outrages were 1250 lbs for regular hull and 1750 lbs for commercial hull, that’s 40% more for the commercial. With the 1986 15 weighing 500/550, 40% would be over 200 lbs. 200 lbs would effect the water line on a 15 foot hull.
