2001 16 DAUNTLESS Adding Rod Holders

Postby Rosh » Fri Aug 28, 2020 3:41 pm

Hi All, This is my first post. I have a 2001 16 Dauntless.

I seek advice on installing flush-mount rod holders in the bow section gunwale.

I assume there is a need to core-out the foam in the gunwale and to add a drain to the bottom of the rod holder.

Thanks for the help.

There is a reason Boston Whaler has not added holders in areas where there is foam.

Piercing the skin, as well as the need for a drain, is a substantial risk for water ingress into the foamed in areas. If not in the near future, it would be just a matter of time.

Unless you are willing to seal the entire cavity and drain hole prior to installation of the holder, adding a rod holder externally to a vertical surface or rail is the more appropriate solution.

If I "had" to install one, I would hire a professional knowledgeable with Boston Whalers to ensure the work was done correctly.

Add clamp-on stainless steel rod holders to the vertical rail stanchions. Place them carefully to avoid them being higher than the rail. Good quality are available at West Marine.

I had them on my 1999 Dauntless 16 which is virtually the same boat you have.
