What is the exact position for the midship cleat on a c.1980 Outrage 18?

My OUTRAGE 18 does not have midship cleats.I'm adding them now.

Where can a stainless [steel rub strake] that always [complements a gunwale-mounted] cleat be purchased?

Swen—Midship cleats were not a factory option.

I installed a set on my Outrage 17 due to the varied docks and piers I visit.

I selected a location that was just forward of the aft-most bow rail stanchion base. I also selected this location since it would be stronger than the gunwale cap.

I over-drilled the holes, dug out the foam, and injected expanding epoxy (Gorilla Glue) to give more strength. Here is a photo.

PHIL--did you use this product from Gorilla Glue brands of many adhesives? I refer to:

It looks like a nice epoxy with a interesting mixing-applicator, but I do not see any mention of expansion when setting.

Mea Culpa, I should not have used the word "epoxy".

It is their polyurathane based expanding glue.

Got it thanks Phil. I'm looking to confirm the exact location of the midship cleat mounted on the 18 wood [gunwale--we use the Boston Whaler spelling--Moderator]. I want to keep the boat factory correct.

A photo would help.

Yes, the OEM [Wilcox, Crittenten & Co.] Marinium cleats are impossible to find. That is why I was just planning to use some other 8-inch cleats.



I found a photo of my Maine boat that works. Seeing [the photo] now, I think [the cleats seen in the photo] are aftermarket. The strakes are longer and shaped a little differently. and the cleat doesn't look like aluminum.

I think I'm going to mount mine right behind the fuel filler.

Is the boat identified as the "Maine boat" also an OUTRAGE 18?

Are the midship cleats seen in Figures 2 and 3 supposed to be interpreted as having been installed at the factory?

For midship I would use a 6" folding cleat. The Accon ones that flush mount.

I'd also recommend the Acconmarine cleats, either the flush mount folding or the spring loaded ones. Reduces the chance of catching a shoe or bare foot on an area of [an OUTRAGE 18] that is prone to have feet on that surface.

We're in the process of moving the two 4.5" popups that were mounted twenty years ago up forward on the deck of our 1973 21' Outrage to mid ship for spring and fender lines. In their place are to 6" popups and another set in the stern, replacing a pair of 8" (I think) oversized cleats.



A disadvantage of model is having to place a plastic shell underneath, and route drain tubes. The forward cleats will drain into the anchor locker, sterns into her bilge. The midships have been plumbed to drain overboard, just above the rubrail.

The folding Accon cleats are spring loaded.

Yes, that's an Outrage 18.

No, I don't think [the cleats seen in Figure 3 are from the] factory. They are not Marinium and the strakes are longer.

From the 1988 OPTIONS catalogue from Boston Whaler on page 26:
