I've been doing a lot of research for information regarding the proper shaft length for a bow mounted trolling motor for our new 2016 170 Dauntless and I'm finding conflicting information.
Does anyone on this forum have a bow mounted trolling motor on a late model Dauntless? Should I go with a 54" or 60" shaft?

Don't have a Dauntless but just installed a Minnkota Riptibe trolling motor on my 170 Montauk. Went with the 60 inch shaft and glad I did. Can use every inch of it in heavy seas Lays back nicely and does not inhibit movement around the deck. I bought the 80 pound trust.

Marc,
thanks for the reply. I followed your advice and purchased the 80lb. with 60" shaft. What length were the screws you used to mount the motor to the bow?

Good question. I had the quick release base mounted to the bow. Webster Marine out of Moneta, VA did the install. They insisted on doing a through bolt mount (dont know the bolt length). I wasn't sure if that was necessary but I'm new to this kind of thing and differed to their judgement. Of course that required cutting an access panel into the bow deck from the vertical section above and to the left of the anchor well. They ran all the wiring under deck. Nice clean install. We just got it back two weeks ago and I have to say it is rock steady on that through bolt mount. We ran into some rough seas and the prop was coming up out of the water with every wave until I lowered shaft down all the way. Glad I ordered it with the 60'. You will love that motor especially if you get the I-pilot. Its a whole new level of fishing.

Hi Marc or MtRotman,
Do you happen to have any pictures of how your bow mount trolling motor has been installed ?
I am trying to learn more about installing a front troller.
From what I have seen so far the boats that have a trolling motor panel have a reineforced area for installing one.. does anyone know if this is the case with all boats or only the ones that have the panel ? (If so on what side is it?)
The boat I am looking at is a 2013 dauntless 170, trollin* motor is a minn kota ulterra 80 with rta17 quick release bracket
Thanks !

Marc - would love to see pictures. I'm currently doing some research on [adding a trolling motor] and I want a minimalist install if possible. Running all the wiring under deck is great. I thought that couldn't happen if it didn't come from the factory with the trolling motor plug.
