Plywood blues

Postby Barnacle » Mon Apr 11, 2016 2:26 pm

Howdy all,

I'm beginning to have a problem with my 1986 Outrage 20 with fiberglass gunwales. The plywood backing in the gunwales is rotting out much in the same way the plywood backing in a gas tank lid does. I suspect it would be a pretty cut and dry process of replacing the plywood once the gunwale is removed from the hull...and that's the big question. Can anyone tell me just what's involved in removing the gunwales?

I'm assuming that your gunwales are the factory replacement for the earlier teak ones?

Hi Don,

Yes, you are correct. The gunwales are genuine Boston Whaler and were factory installed.
According to her original owner, the fiberglass version was available as an option in 1986.
