1979 11-footer Seal for Aft Compartment Hatch

On a 1979 11-footer I have made a hinged lid for the aft compartment out of KING StarBoard.

Q1: Is there a way to seal the compartment from rain water?

The 11-footer is a tender for my other boat, so it is always in the water. I would like to store a few items in the aft compartment, but it is always wet from rainwater.

Add a gasket on the lip underneath.
