11 SUPER SPORT Steering
11 SUPER SPORT Steering
Hello, I have a 1987 11' Super Sport and I am switching from the pulley steering to the Teleflex cable steering. I am mounting a new motor and I noticed the cable won't go into the steering tube because the transom is in the way. Is there some way to get around this?
Re: 11 SUPER SPORT Steering
Hi, I have the same concern with my recently restored 1986 11 Sport, I just purchased a Mercury FOURSTROKE 20-HP, and when examining the Teleflex steering set-up I realized without raising the motor the steering push rod will strike the transom. I've been reading up on raising the motor to allow clearance for the steering while not negatively impacting boat performance. Most of the posts I've read so far discuss mounting the engine in various configurations for performance reasons but I'm thinking if raising it improves the performance and provides clearance, then two birds with one stone. I'm looking forward to hearing more on the subject before mounting the engine. Thanks

I am a little shocked at the lack of replies. Hasn't anyone run into this problem in the past?
I found this on line http://www.westmarine.com/buy/teleflex--transom-support-master-mounting-kits--P006_182_002_501 I'm not sure how well it will work, anyone use this method?

Re: 11 SUPER SPORT Steering
Don't be shocked as 11s are as rare as hen's teeth. Can you take a pic so people know what problem you are facing?
Re: 11 SUPER SPORT Steering
If they are so rare, I shouldn't have a problem when I sell it. ;) I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it.
Re: 11 SUPER SPORT Steering
Assuming you have a 15" motor you will need to use the standoff that you referenced at West Marine. The only other option is to build us the transom to get the tilt tube up higher or use a jack plate. But then you will need a 20" motor.. These options are more expensive and more work. So I would go with the standoff that you found. Be careful to test the location before you drill to make sure you get a decent turning radius in each direction.
Re: 11 SUPER SPORT Steering
I have a 1978 11 whaler, I redid it 3 years ago and raised the transom 1 inch, I have a 25 yamaha 2 stroke on the transom and Im using a teleflex cable steering, the cable runs through the engines steering tube and misses my transom by 1/16 of an inch, I was lucky. The other route is to use the steering standoff as shown in the post above. Only use a stainless one if you choose to use one...
Re: 11 SUPER SPORT Steering
Thanks Contender! my plan is to raise the motor as well no more than 1.5-inch to mount the steering through the tilt tube. It is good to hear you cleared the steering and transom by raising 1-inch. Please confirm your Yamaha is a 15-inch-shaft. Thank you

Don't be shocked. That's what happens when you mess with a good thing. Cable and pulley steering is the perfect steering system for the 11- and 13-foot Whaler. It's simple, reliable, and just looks right. By the way, your old system is valuable. Hope you still have it.
