Classic 13 with E-TEC 30

Postby Pick13 » Sat Jun 25, 2016 7:59 pm

[On a classic 13-foot Boston Whaler boat with an Evinrude E-TEC-30 engine] has anyone tried a 14-pitch propeller?

I had a propeller of 10 x 12 that came with the E-TEC 30, and I recently tried an OEM propeller of 10.3 x 13 to get more top-end speed. I could not tell a lot of difference, maybe 2 to 3 -MPH and acceleration was still good. [Maximum boat speed is] about 28-MPH. [The boat] can reach 30-MPH with the engine trim set so it's porpoising. Could the engine handle a 10 x 14? Typically [the boat is operated with] one to four people with a mix of kids and adults.

Does the engine have a tachometer connected to it?

No. I have used an app that listens to the engine. Not sure how accurate it is, but shows 5800 with one aboard, 5500sh with 2 adults, two kids, about 510lbs.

I sold our 1987 13 Super Sport with a 30 E-TEC last fall. It came with a 10 x 12p, 3-blade aluminum prop. The rpm's were a bit over 6000 when pushed and trimmed.
I then moved to a Stainless Steel 10 x 13p 3-blade. Maxed out at 5850 rpm according to my tach, and reached 30mph. Good acceleration, good power range throughout. It did pretty much anything well. It would even plane 5 adults with little complaint.
I think the perfect match for that hull. It also had a Sting-Ray Jr. Hydrofoil, which really helped low speed planing in choppy water.
