210 Montauk Evinrude 200 H.O. G2

Postby Ridge Runner » Fri Sep 30, 2016 3:27 pm

The deal for repowering a new Boston Whaler 210 MONTAUK with a Mercury OptiMax 200 engine fell through. I went down the path of doing this with a G1 E-TEC. In the end, after much deliberation, I decided to go with a G2 E-TEC 200 H.O.

I have purchased the boat and paid for the upgrade on the engine. This will take a bit to get the engine ordered and to get rigged up, but here is the boat and the color combination on the G2 I decided to go with:

A 210 MONTAUK with an Evinrude E-TEC 200 H.O. G2 engine should be quite a rig. I look forward to hearing more about the performance of your new boat with the Evinrude E-TEC 200 H.O. G2 engine.

It will be interesting to see how it compares in performance to the 210 Montauk rigged with the Mercury XL L6 DTS.

[Remarks about electronics are moved to SMALL BOAT ELECTRICAL.--jimh]

The boat will have digital controls and the propeller will be an Evinrude RX4.

BTW - my 170 Montauk with the E-TEC 115 H.O. will be going up for sales soon.

Wow - should be a rocket sled. I am guessing you'll see as much as 55MPH at WOT.

Looking forward to performance reports.

I am very excited to see how this boat/motor combination will run. Propeller selection might be a bit of a challenge. I was going to go with the new Evinrude RX4 propeller, but after some researching and talking to BRP, one of the strengths of this propeller is that "it delivers superior bow lift'.

In the past I have not had very good results with bow lifting propellers on 170 Montauk boats. In my experience they raise the lifting strakes out of the water and the rounded stern becomes the only running surface, making the boat squirrel-ly and prone to proposing.

On my 170 Montauk with the E-TEC 115HO I have had very good results with the Power Tech SCD-4 a stern lifting semi-cleaver propeller. Since I might be the first one putting a G2 200HO on a 210 Montauk there isn't really much of a point of reference. The closest would be the performance reports from Boston Whaler with the 210 Montauk rigged with the Mercury super charged 200HP L-6 Verado (almost 100-lbs heavier); the factory uses a Mercury 14 7/8" x 16" Enertia propeller - which after some research seems to be a fairly neutral lift propeller.

I spent some time on the phone with Power Tech and with all the torque the 3.4L G2 block produces they recommend starting with a 14-1/4 x17 SFS4 propeller. The technician mentioned that the SFS4 propeller (see below) has moderate rake, good blade area and is a slight stern lifting propeller. Comments are very much welcome.

It's hard to tell if the lower unit will be clear of the water, as the tow arch is blocking full tilt of the outboard. A factory rigged 210 Montauk with a Mercury Verado 200 XL L6 also has the same concern:

Wow - Whaler built a tow arch that won't let you raise the motor all the way? Oops - some designer is looking for a new job.

In fairness to Boston Whaler engineers all the original motors available when the tow arch was designed did fit properly. When Boston Whaler made the Mercury Verado 200 XL L6 an option a few of years ago this became a problem. I talked to Boston Whaler and they acknowledged the problem. At the factory they tilt limit the Mercury Verado 200 XL L6.

The lower unit of the outboard just clears the water:

The Evinrude 200 H.O. G2 weights 80 pounds more than the standard Mercury 150 FourStroke and 98 pounds less than the optional Mercury 200 Verado Pro FourStroke L6.

Well sometimes life gets in the way of the best of intentions. My responsibilities changed drastically and suddenly at work and I have had to travel internationally the last few months. The boat has been sitting on the trailer in the driveway. I am hoping to get her to the marina this week-end and get some time on the water.

Here are few performance statistics:

Two adults onboard, half a tank of fuel ~33 gallons, 85 degree air temp, 72 degree water temp, mild chop, saltwater.

Average time to plane ~3.13 seconds - I did 5 runs
Top speed 50MPH at 6,000RPM's - I still had some throttle left
Propeller: 14 3/4" x 17" Viper TBX
Gear ratio: 1.85:1
Weight: 537lbs
Full Throttle RPM Range: 5400-6000 RPM

The Boston Whaler performance report for the 210 Montauk with a Mercury 200 Verado Pro:
Propeller: 14 7/8” x 16” Enertia
Time to plane 3.5 seconds
Top speed 50.3MPH at 6,350RPM's
Gear ratio: 1.85:1
Weight: 635lbs
Full Throttle RPM Range: 5800-6400

My performance is a little better on time to plane and about the same on the top-end with a 1" larger pitch prop compared to the Mercury 200 Verado Pro with the Enertia propeller.

I am very impressed with the G2 E-TEC 200 H.O. the torque is amazing.
When I tested time to plane the bow hardly rises.
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to measure fuel consumption yet.

The 14 3/4" x 17" Viper TBX seems to be a good all around propeller for this boat/motor combination but I didn't get a chance to see if I get any prop blow out in hard turns.

As I gather more information I will post it.
