1988 Sport 13 Re-power

Is there anything I should know about engine shaft length [when re-powering a 1988 SPORT 13]?

The [1988 SPORT 13] currently has a Yamaha 25-HP two-stroke-power-cycle engine. I'm open to switching out the controls and would like to have power tilt-trim.

Is there any new consensus on the [re-powering of a SPORT 13]?

Thanks

I had a new 1988 Sport 13, and chose a Yahama 30-HP two-stroke. I could actually pull an average-size adult on skis with two persons in the boat. The newer four-stroke-power-cycle engines are much better on gas consumption, but may not have quite as much oomph initially. The SPORT 13 takes a 20-inch outboard shaft.

The 30 hp E-TEC would be my pick for a new motor. It is light weight and from what I've read it performs well.

I don't see how to know if there is a consensus. Usually arriving at a consensus means some sort of compromise. And we have two replies and already have two different recommendations. I don't see much value in finding consensus. Get the engine you want.

When buying a new engine, I would choose the engine based on what is available locally from local dealers. New engines are expensive and I want to get good after-sale support from the dealer that sold the engine. The dealer is a big factor for me.

A SPORT 13 hull from c. 1988 should have a transom sized for 20-inch-shaft outboards. Weight is a consideration.

Fuel economy is probably best with the two-stroke direct-injection engines like the E-TEC. The fuel economy of the E-TEC at idle speeds is amazing, and you will spend most of the operating time at low engines speeds. The freedom from maintenance of the E-TEC is also a great advantage. And the power output of the E-TEC is a great advantage.

I was just underway for about an hour on an rigid-bottom inflatable boat with a 25-HP E-TEC. It was an impressive engine.

The reason my boat has an E-TEC is the local E-TEC dealer is a fantastic dealer. He actually is interested in making re-power sales of loose engines and installing them on customers' boats. Most of the other local dealers were interested in selling new boats with engines already installed at the factory, and a re-power sale was a nuisance to them. Find a good dealer to work with. Buy what he sells.

I would highly recommend the 30 E-TEC. Our 1987 Super Sport and the 30 E-TEC are a perfect match. It does EVERYTHING well.
