1986 Outrage 18 with 2001 Honda BF130

Has anyone had any experience with [a 1986 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 18 boat] with [a 2001 HONDA BF130] outboard?

The Honda BF130 weighs about 500-lbs from what I can find. They seem to work well, and anyone who has one seems pleased.

Are they a good combination?

Thanks,
Don

I have no experience with a Honda 130 c.2001. I did a GOOGLE search on those terms. The first result began like this:

I am the unfortunate owner of a Honda Outboard 130...

My impression of these engines: they are old designs. Note that 2001 was 16 years ago, and there has been significant change in four-stroke-power-cycle outboard engine design and development in those 16 years. Newer engines are lighter, produce more power, and have much wider power RPM ranges. I think these early Honda outboard engines were adaptations of their vehicle engines, not true marine engines designed from scratch to run on raw saltwater cooling.

For weight, compare to a Suzuki DF140 at 410-lbs.

However, in favor of those old-school Honda engines: they tend to run a long time. As long as the cooling system stays together. (See that thread Iinked above.)

For an OUTRAGE 18 a 500-lbs engine is bit heavy. But then some guys run twin engines or a main and auxiliary, with similar or higher total weight.

Thanks Jim, I read that post, I guess if a head goes in any 2001 outboard, you have big problems. Hondas are low production numbers, so parts are likely rare and harder to find. You can find lots of bad outboard motors of all makes, the forums are full of them.

But if they are reliable for most people who own them, that means a lower risk. I don't see a lot of people complaining about Honda out boards, but that could be because of low sales numbers?

Any used boat you buy with a 2001 motor is a gamble?

I looked at NADA used values for 2001 Honda, Evinrude, Yamaha, and Mercury, in that year its hard to compare apples to apples. The Honda was cheapest at $2600, the others ranged up to $800 more. Not sure how meaningful or accurate those numbers are, but presumably they have some real world basis.

I was hoping to hear from someone who owns this combination of 130HP Honda and a 80's Outrage.

I have read numerous complaints on boating forums about Honda internal engine sacrificial anodes wasting to nothing and causing cooling water passageways to waste to the extent that water could enter the engine. I can't quantify numerous. If I were to buy any mature Honda Engine I would check the condition of all the anodes.

Re total transom weight on an OUTRAGE 18: I would refer to the well-known GAMBLER for an example of transom weight. Dave had a pair of E-TEC 90-HP engines on the transom, and they were mounted on set-back brackets. An E-TEC 90 weights 320-lbs. The Rite-Hite 10-inch brackets probably weighed 25-lbs. The transom weight was about 700-lbs. See

The GAMBLER ran very nicely with that set up. There were no problems, even in big water. There are some pictures of GAMBLER underway in my SAIL-LOG report from 2009. Here is one with GAMBLER in some big waves:

On the basis of Dave's experience with GAMBLER, I would not worry about a single 500-lbs engine on an OUTRAGE 18.

I have a 1984 Outrage with a 2004 Honda 150. Yes it sits around an inch lower than the Johnson 150 but I am very satisfied with the Honda.
The Honda is easy on gas and very powerful. I have low hours and about all I have had to service is oil change, gear case oil, and water pump once.
Really satisfied.
