1986 Outrage 18: Engine Height

Postby Don SSDD » Sun Oct 15, 2017 12:24 pm

I bought another Whaler with a 2001 Honda BF130-HP. I got very little history on the boat or the motor.

I get a huge spray next to both sides of the motor from say 3500-RPM to full throttle 5700-RPM, and a GPS-measured speed of 39-MPH. This is with me alone in the board and almost calm water. The boat has a stainless propeller, but I can't find any numbers on it. I assume the 39-MPH is fairly good for this Whaler with a 130-HP.

The spray is higher than the outboard motor by 1 to 2 feet and contains a lot of water, almost like two small "rooster tails". There is a small fish finder transducer on the starboard side of the stern, nothing on the port side and the spray seems the same on both sides.

Could this spray be a symptom of the outboard being mounted too low? It is mounted 1 hole up now and I can't see the anti-ventilation plate at all when on plane. I thought my speed was fairly good with whatever propeller I have, but I find the spray to be unusual.

Thanks for any input.

There are a few others with a Honda 130 on the Outrage 18 and they are seeing low to mid 40’s top speed WOT.

The Outrage 18 I had powered with a DF140 Suzuki would just touch 44 with a light load, but I liked it better when under-propped for a top speed of 41-MPH, because I got better acceleration from a standing start onto plane and better overall performance with a heavy load. I had my engine mounted three-holes-up.

With [only] 5700-RPM [at WOT], I’d suggest raising the motor two holes, which should get you to 6000 to 6100-RPM and another 2-MPH.

There is likely a part number on the [propeller] hub, perhaps requiring the shaft nut to be removed in order to read the part number.

Does your boat have bottom paint or a T-top? Both will reduce top speed.

I would mount at max height since OM specs indicate transom height is 26.1". Should be the two holes up Marko888 recommended.

Where are you seeing the transom height of an OUTRAGE 18 specified as 26.1-inches?

I am not seeing that concerning the Outrage 18. Transom height is the nomenclature Honda used to denote shaft length.

Honda BF130 Owners Manual has the specs. for the actual length of the L & X shafts. X shaft length/transom height is specified as 26.1".

I completely misunderstood number9's comment. Apparently the dimension of 26.1-inches has nothing to do with the transom height of the OUTRAGE 18, but instead it is associated with some dimension of the Honda engine. The way number9 presented the information was not clear (to me), and I made the inference that number9 was talking about the boat's transom because number9 mentioned the dimension 26.1-inch in connection with "transom" height. It would perhaps be clearer to mention that for this particular engine there is some dimension of 26.1-inches related to the length of the engine shaft.

So far, I moved it up one notch, it got rid of most of the excessive spray and seems more stable at top end. I wasn't able to try it with flat water as before, but I did get another 100 RPM to 5800 and 40MPH.
I'll try it up another notch when I get a chance.

It comes up on plane fast and accelerates very quickly.

Don -

The prop part # can be found stamped inside the hub.

You may not get smooth water for a few days with that wicked storm.

Thanks. We are getting a storm for today, then cooler but then warm. I was sailing on Saturday and on the Whaler on Sunday, unbelievable weather this Oct.
