1999 Outrage 17, 150-HP

The dealer is saying [the propeller pitch that is appropriate for a new E-TEC 150 should be a 17-pitch, but [the 1999 OUTRAGE 17] had a 19 pitch [when it was powered by] a [Mercury 135-HP OptiMax].

[I am wondering] if Tom Clark or another expert would give their opinion?

Note that propeller sizing is NOT universal. Each model of prop has subtle difference in the blade design so someone who says you should use a XX-pitch propelleris giving you meaningless information.

Recommendations include:

SST 14-3/4" x 19" (#176617)
Viper 14-3/4" x 19" (#176627)

Remember that E-TEC's like to be mounted HIGH on the hull, so dsepite what your dealer says, go two-hole-up or three-holes-u.

I have a 1996 Outrage 17 with a 2011 E-TEC 150 mounted two-holes up. After experimenting with a few propellers I settled on a Mercury ENERTIA with a pitch of 15. With this I get maximum engine speed of 5700-RPM--within the optimum recommended by Evinrude--and a top speed of approximately 46-MPH SOG measured by GPS.

Fuel economy at cruising speed around 3500 to 4000 ROM is excellent at approximately 4.5-MPG.

The ENERTIA is not known as a propeller that gives you the highest top speed, but does give excellent cruising efficiency.

If top speed is more important you may get a couple more MPH from a propeller like the Viper referenced by Phil.

V-

What is the exact size you have, X" by 15"? I will add your specs to my reference list for future inquires.

[The] propeller on the 135 was a 19-pitch MIRAGEplus, [and the engine was] mounted two-holes-up.

Thank you for the input. Many thanks.

I am most interested in stopping the bouncing when I trim the motor.

Do you have the new E-TEC G2 engine? Or the legacy E-TEC engine?

What is the gear ratio on the new 150-HP engine?

What sort of boat speeds were you getting before with this boat and the 135-HP engine at full throttle.

The engine should not be bouncing. If the engine bounces you should check the hydraulic trim system. Once you set the trim the engine should be locked at that trim and not bounce at all.

The ENERTIA propeller I am using is 15 inches in diameter.

The engine isn't bouncing, the boat is.

[The engine is a] 2017 [E-TEC] 150 G1.

[I am ] not sure of the gear ratio.

The engine is being mounted today. I asked for it to be mounted as high as possible.

I never got to hit the maximum speed because the boat would [go into repeated up and down oscillation of the bow] when I trimmed the motor.

Go--you need to trim the motor OUT. Watch the engine RPM as you increase trim. When they stop increasing, tap the trim switch down two quick bumps.

You may need to check your weight distribution. Is there anything in the forward cooler?

The [1999 OUTRAGE 17] boat was empty except for a 12-gallon fuel tank under the RPS. The new [E-TEC 150-HP legacy engine] is 15 or 20-lbs lighter [than a previous engine] so that should help a bit--plus I replacing the inboard fuel tank.

The repeated up and down oscillation of the bow of a boat while on plane is generally not going to be caused or cured by propeller choice. Usually careful adjustment of engine trim, change of weight distribution on the boat (to reduce weight at the stern), and engine mounting height will affect this tendency.

Every boat, engine, and propeller combination can be driven into a condition of repeated up and down oscillation of the bow, but some particular combinations of boat, engine, and propeller will have a wider range of setting where the oscillation will occur and sustain. On my own boat I have found that at certain speeds and certain wave conditions there is a very big range of engine trim that will sustain oscillations, and eliminating them requires setting a very pronounced bow-down trim, which in itself is very unfavorable.

I noticed [repeated oscillation of the bow] with the old engine. I was hoping to pick a stern-lifting propeller for the new [legacy E-TEC] 150 .
