1990 22 GUARDIAN Re-power with Honda 225

Postby Surfnfisher » Tue Apr 10, 2018 1:08 am

Is a HONDA 225 too heavy to re-power [a 1990] GUARDIAN 22 with open transom?

The GUARDIAN 22 has a 60-gallon bait tank. [When angling there are] three adults [aboard]. The upgrade is from old two-stroke-power-cycle V4. I may move [the center console] and leaning post [forward], if possible. Thanks for your help. Cheers

How much does a HONDA 225 weigh?

Did the GUARDIAN 22 only have a single V4 two-stroke-power-cycle engine? That suggests only about 115-HP for the present set-up. And that sounds very low power.

Yeah, [the GUARDIAN 22] had an Evinrude 140-HP for the last 20 years. [At] full throttle [the 140-HP] still moves [the boat] okay--25 to 27-MPH--but with full fuel, bait, and three guys, the boat is underpowered--but does get on plane. As the day goes on and the fuel weight disappears the boat runs better.

I was looking at a Honda 225 with 30-inch shaft, and putting an extender on the transom so the powerhead would be higher off the water.

Is the 225 too heavy? The 225 weighs 600 lbs--a lot.

Thanks

There are two GUARDIAN 22 boats I know of that have twin engines. I think they both have older two-stroke-power-cycle engines. Two older two-stroke engines would have a total weight of more than 600-lbs.

In an archived discussion about maximum transom weight, still available at

MAXIMUM TRANSOM WEIGHT
http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002449.html

I mentioned that the GUARDIAN 22 hull was rated for 720-lbs maximum transom weight in a 2004 catalogue from the Commercial and Government Products (CGP) division of Boston Whaler.

On the basis of the two boats working well with twin engines of more than 600-lbs, and on the basis of the CGP literature allowing 720-lbs, I don't think the HONDA 225 engine you are considering at 600-lbs is going to be too much weight on the transom of a GUARDIAN 22.

Of course, a 600-lbs engine will be a lot more weight than is on the transom now, so you should anticipate that the static trim will be affected. Since you mention bait and bait tanks, I assume you will be angling from the boat and perhaps trolling. Lower trim at transom may allow some water to came aboard over the top of the transom.

Does your particular GUARDIAN 22 have the full-width splashwell that runs across the whole cockpit?

Or does it have the smaller "sink" style splashwell just in the center section of the transom?

Before I would change the location of the center console and the leaning post, I would first move the batteries out of the transom and to the console. That ought to get at least 50-lbs and perhaps as much as 120-lbs out of the transom.

Your present engine probably has a remote oil tank, and that weight will be eliminated with a new Honda 225.

Thanks. Yeah, after reading up, [the 600-lbs weight of a Honda 225] should be fine.

Gonna be nice having extra power, and no smoke. Thanks again

I have that Honda 225 on my OUTRAGE 22, and it is great.

Seawater will come over your transom regardless of the engine, so have your pumps ready unless you build blocks on the sides of the engine.
