1987 Outrage 18 Repower Height Advice
I recently purchased a 1987 Outrage 18 and will be repowering with a new Yamaha F115. The Mercury 150 I am removing was mounted one-hole-up. I would appreciate advice on whether the new engine should be mounted at the same height or perhaps higher. Thanks
Re: 1987 Outrage 18 Repower Height Advice
It will depend on the prop you select.
Members with a Outrage 18 and the F115 have selected either
13-1/4" x 15" Turbo 1/Yamaha Performance Series 3 blade
13-1/4" x 16" Yamaha Painted SS
If you go with a painted or polished stainless steel prop, start with 2 holes up. After some testing, you can see if you want to go 3 holes up. It will depend on your loading and average sea state.
I ran an Outrage 17 with a F115 and went with 2 holes up due to choppy seas.

Re: 1987 Outrage 18 Repower Height Advice
Thanks Phil. What prop would you recommend if I start out with an aluminum prop? By the way, I'll mostly be using the boat along the northern Calif coast as well as Lake Tahoe which is around 6200 ft. elevation.
Re: 1987 Outrage 18 Repower Height Advice
I would not use aluminum.
I know that props are expensive but they perform better, are more durable and less prone to damage. The addage of using an aluminum prop to take the damage rather than the gearcase has been debunked.
If you absolutely have to I would go with the Yamaha aluminum. Not sure of the size. I, personally, would ask Andy @ SIM Yamaha. They are a great dealer that does online orders. I would call him and ask him what is size aluminum is comparable to the Performance Series size listed above.

Now it is important to note that the higher elevation of Tahoe will change the performance of the F115. I would check with Andy to see if you will want a smaller pitch prop for the higher elevation.
