210 Outrage Trim Tab: Recommendation; Installation

Postby Stevehfov » Thu Aug 02, 2018 9:09 pm

Hi Continous Wave members. I recently acquired a 2007 210 Outrage. I would like to add trim tabs to enhance its performance, since my 210 OUTRAGE does not have the factory installed Bennett 9x9 trim tabs (which are no longer available).

Any real world experiences with Bennett aftermarket trim tabs, advantages or disadvantage, and the best model option [would be appreciated in responses to this thread].

I am aware of the mounting challenges of limited space of th2 210 OUTRAGE transom design to mount the actuators to achieve the manufacturer’s recommended fully-retracted position.

Has any 210 Outrage owner been successful in mounting aftermarket trim tabs that achieve the manufacturer’s recommended fully retracted position?

If so, what model was used?

What did it take to complete the install?

Was this project worth the effort?

Thank you for any insight.

Steve

FOLLOW UP: I installed Bennett Bolts Model 9 x 12 Edge-mount trim tabs. I didn't want to deal with hydraulic lines. I installed the simple rocker-style helm control (not shown).

As you can see from the starboard swim step pictures, I used a small rotary tool and created more recess to accommodate the tabs. All said and done, I achieved a 3/8-inch negative articulation, not the 5/8-inch recommended by Bennett.

This past weekend took the Outrage offshore for a 130-mile round trip and tested in all conditions: up=swell, quartering-swell and wind waves, and a down-swell run home. I am pleased with the results. My main concern was the down-swell performance since I didn't have the 5/8-inch clearance. There were no problem, as with tabs fully retracted the boat ran well without lowering the bow.

I now am able to trim the Optimax 225 engine in a more optimal running position. Before tab installation, I had to trim the engine fully down (tucked in) to get the bow down somewhat, but not down far enough when running uphill and could not correct for list. Now I have improved feel and smoother ride. I have no pre-tab and post-tab efficiency numbers. But running home at4000-RPM at 32 to 34-MPH I was averaging between 2.2 to 2.3-MPG according to the Smartcraft gauge, and the engine was trimmed level.

I am satisfied with the initial results.

Thank you for the follow up report and the illustrations.

I re-oriented your images so they would appear correctly as in-line elements, added them to your initial reply, and gave them identifying captions.

I believe Fig.1 and Fig 2. show the starboard side installation of the actuator mounting under the swim platform.

Glad I found this post. I'm looking at a 2006 boat that does not have tabs. I wonder if the boat will need them and if so, which tabs to use.

I found the mounting diagrams for the tabs in the factory drawing, but there weren't any dimensions for the actuators. I didn't know what length would work or what problems I might run into when mounting the actuators.

I prefer the Lenco electrically-actuated tabs. I don't want to add hydraulics for the Bennett tabs--the original factory types. I see that many boat builders are using the Lenco as OEM installed equipment these days.

Guess I'll finish my research once I have the boat on my driveway.

ZIGzag, I think you should pay attention to the details of Stevehof's description of his install of the Bennet electric actuators. It's a been there done that scenario. I am considering the same modification and if what he has done before works that works for me. Lenco's are also nice hardware but where is anybody talking about an install on a 210 Outrage?

I'd look at 12 x 12 tabs. I think they'd fit just fine, maybe better as a lot of the lifting is blocked by the chines. No such thing as too big. You'll be able to lower your planing speed even more.
I had 12 x 12 Lenco's on a 1992 21 Walkaround. Trim Tabs really helped; a 1992 21 WALKAROUND is a really stern-heavy boat.

Be very very careful what tabs and style you use on this hull-theres not much real estate where they go and angle is gonna be very small preventing tabs to extend much therefore reducing their function. Only edge mount works on this hull and 9x12 ( 9 wide and 12 long)is what factory was installing if I remember. You will have to cut piece of swim platform for the starboard tab actuator bracket. This boat definitely needs tabs. Had same hull with and without them.

Interestingly [on another boat, later identified as a 2007 210 Outrage that does not have trim tabs], the swim platform appears to have a notch cut in it already. Not sure if [the builder of the other boat] did that (in 2007) as standard practice in case the trim tab option was ordered.

I will call Bennett and ask about the actuator length of their Bolt-series tabs. They look to be short in the pictures.

I have had the [later identified as a 2007 210 Outrage] boat [that has no trim tabs] out only once. [This boat] didn't seem to need [trim tabs] to get on plane. The Verado FOURSTROKE 200 with four-blade propeller and Permatrim puts this boat on plane faster than anything I've ever owned. But I did notice how sensitive [this later identified as a 2007 210 Outrage boat] is to weight and balance port-starboard. A few more runs and I'll have a better feel.

ZIGZAG--what sort of boat are you talking about? You have never mentioned its manufacturer, model, or length.

Boat is a 2007 210 Outrage.

I spoke with Boston Whaler. Boston Whaler told me Lenco was the manufacturer of the tabs and they were 9x9.

After speaking with Lenco, the say [the original trim tab used on the 2007 210 OUTRAGE] was the edge mount 9x9, but [LENCO] told me that the 9x12 would work better, and considering the (low) weight of the 210 OUTRAGE, this [9x12] size would be a great choice. A 9x9 tab is 13.5-inches from the bottom of the hull to the top of the upper actuator mount. A 9x12 tab is less (due to the longer chord length) and require 11-3/8-inches. Both measurements include leaving the 3/8-inch suggested space up from the bottom of the hull.

Bennett seemed to think that Lenco actuator arms would be shorter, but disappointedly offered no exact dimensions of their setup.

I went with Bennett Bolt edge-mounts for their lifetime actuator warranty, Bennet have made improvements to their electric tabs in recent years. Bennett were also very helpful over the phone when deciding on which tabs would work best. Bennett hydraulic tabs were the original ones that were installed by Boston Whaler for the 210 Outrage in 2007. After doing my research I believe they are comparable to Lenco now with a better warranty.

Stevehfov, thanks for the information.

I believe the Bennet Bolt model trim tabs will be a great way to go, but for now I have decided to hold off [on making any change to the boat or the trim tabs].

I've had the [2007 210 OUTRAGE] boat out about five times now and can't say trim has been much of a problem. I'm not sure if the Permatrim gets the credit, but this Outrage planes [literally] immediately, stays on plane at [an engine speed of 3,000-RPM ([or] even lower) and doesn't seem to have much list when running. I'll know better [if trim tabs are needed] after having the [the 210 OUTRAGE] for a season and watching how [the 210 OUTRAGE] behaves in various conditions.

Thanks for all the input.

In reading the above comments I see there is conflict. The original trim tab used on the 210 OUTRAGE is described as being from two different manufacturers. Can we have a clarification?

I don't have tabs, so I could not say what actually came on the 2007. When I called Boston, they told me Lenco was the supplier, but perhaps they used both Lenco and Bennett as suppliers. Interesting.

Per the 2007 210 Outrage owners manual on page 31 it lists and describes the components and operation of the hydraulic trim tabs. Also the schematic drawing number 1041 for the 210 Outrage can be downloaded from Boston Whaler's website, these drawings list hydraulic tabs.

PHIL--thanks for providing the URL to the drawing. I see that the trim tabs are all identified with callout 7, and are listed under a Boston Whaler part number. But seeing that the system is a hydraulic system, I think that clears up who made it: BENNETT.

Steve, in your photos I cannot tell if you used edge mount tabs versus conventional tabs. Can you enlighten us before I proceed further?

He used the edge mount tabs. If you go back you'll see where he identifies them and can also tell by the pictures.

Looks like a tight fit on the side with the boarding platform and slight modifications (dremel work) to get it tucked in under the platform.

I wish I could somehow compare an Outrage 210 with and without tabs. Aside from slight listing in very strong winds, the Permatrim seems to be working pretty well.

Anyway, I may [install trim tabs] down the road. I have decided there are other items I want need more. [Mentioned three other items that were not related to trim tabs. A new thread has been started in REPAIRS and MODIFICATIONS about the topics that were not related to PERFORMANCE.]

In the spirit of keeping this topic alive, I just ordered Bennett 12" x 12" edge-mount electric tabs with the indication controls. For a short while I considered the 9' x 12" tabs but [many] boaters have indicated to me that bigger is better. I determined that the larger tabs will fit. I will keep posting on the install progress and performance after I receive them from the vendor.

The vendor with the lowest priced online that I could find was ANCHOREXPRESS.COM. The ordering process was painless until I received an email that my order is not in stock and will be shipped on April 17, 2019. The delay was not a problem as long as ANCHOREXPRESS.COM are being truthful.
