2006 150 Sport

Postby Jdwaquoit » Sat Sep 08, 2018 5:46 am

Hello, I am trying to get optimal performance out of my 2006 150 Sport with Mercury 60-HP EFI Bigfoot. I have tried multiple propellers 13 and 14 inch pitch but always with negative results. I am currently using a Mercury Vengence 14 Pitch 48-17314 stamp part# on the prop, and can achieve 22 to 23 [MPH] at 5600-RPM with myself and no gear (empty boat). Trimming practices have not produced the speeds that I think Whaler intended for this boat. With family and gear or three adults the boat will not get on plane and [the engine] will not exceed 4000-RPM. Just pushing water and struggling. I dont think I have a Flow Torq III Hub. This hub kit has been suggested on the Wave forums.

I love my Whaler and would like to resolve this as old-man-winter will find me and Ol' Cape Cod soon. My experience and love of Whalers started at Boston Whaler Mfg Plant in Norwell MA Rt 53, Grade A Hull Converter, Outrage-Revenge Line 1986 to 19990, Teamsters, miss those days.

Grateful for any suggestions you may have.

John -

The boat was sold by the dealer with a Whaler supplied 13 3/8 x 14" Mercury SST prop.
The engine was mounted by the factory is the 3rd hole down from the top, also known as "2 holes up"
See this diagram for reference: http://bostonwhaler.com.s3.amazonaws.com/resources/150-Sport-Engine-Installation-with-Parts-List-2006.pdf

Is the engine rigged as above?

Is this boat new to you or had it for a while? Ever run better?

When was the engine last serviced? Filters, Plugs etc?
Does the boat have bottom paint? Condition?

Detail the locations of gear and passengers in the boat. Where is battery, fuel tank, coolers, gear, toolbox and each person located?

Detail the engine trimming settings you set for the boat in displacement and planing conditions.

Is the engine rigged as above? - YES
Is this boat new to you or had it for a while? Ever run better? -NEW TO ME THIS YEAR SPRING 2018

When was the engine last serviced? Filters, Plugs etc? Condition? MECHANICAL SURVEY WAS WAS PERFORMED PRIOR TO SALE. THE ENGINE WAS FOUND TO BE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER (750HOURS) SERVICE RECORDS INDICATE ROUTINE SERVICE PERFORMED YEARLY C/O REPUTABLE LOCAL MARINA

Does the boat have bottom paint? THE BOTTOM PAINT IS A LITTLE SKETCHY BUT OK OVERALL, NO BARNICLES OR GROWTH ETC...

Detail the locations of gear and passengers in the boat. Where is battery, fuel tank, coolers, gear, toolbox and each person located? (2 ADULTS ON CENTER BENCH SEAT AND 1 ON BOW LOCKER, BATTERY UNDER CONSOLE. 2 - 6 GALLON CANS UNDER CENTER BENCH. ANCHOR IN LOCKER, TYPICAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT.

Detail the engine trimming settings you set for the boat in displacement and planing conditions. I USUALLY THROTTLE UP QUICKLY FROM SLOW SPEED AND WAIT FOR BOW TO RISE THEM TRIM UP ENGINE ACCORDINGLY TO KEEP BOW DOWN AND RPM/STEERING MANAGEABLE

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this as I have already paid a mechanic who just wanted to change props but to no avail. We did try a 13inch pitch to try and get more RPM under heavy load.

Well, your setup is stock so something is amiss.

This thread backs up the engine/prop setup.

I think you want to change the hub to a Flow Torq III Hub and retest.

The other suggestion is spark plugs and filters.
