1986 MONTAUK 60-HP

Postby Hakuna matata ll » Wed Oct 02, 2019 11:46 pm

I need to re-power my [1986 MONTAUK] that had a Yamaha 90-HP two-stroke-power-cycle engine. I would love to hang an E-TEC 90 or Yamaha F70, but funds are low.

I can get a 2011 Mercury 60 FOURSTROKE BIGFOOT from my cousin. He will give it to me. It is just sitting in his garage.

I will be running [the MONTAUK] on Long Island Sound with just two people on board, or occasionally two adults and two kids.

How will a 60-HP work with the MONTAUK?

I had an E-TEC 60 on my 1966 16-footer, it was adequate for my use. Top maximum speed was about 34-MPH with a jack plate to get the engine up a bit while running, but usually top speed was closer to 30-MPH.

If the engine is free why not accept it, install it on the boat, and use it to see how you like it? With the bigfoot gearcase you may find that performance is more than adequate for your needs. Can't beat the price!

Is the boat a MONTAUK 17?

If the 60-HP engine is fitted with the proper propeller, it should be able to easily get a MONTAUK 17 on plane. The minimum power published by Boston Whaler to reach plane with a MONTAUK 17 is only 35-HP.

For more advice on a MONTAUK 17 re-power read the REFERENCE article at

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/refere ... power.html

The topic of re-powering a MONTAUK 17 is probably the most-discussed topic in the re-powering and performance realm, so there are many prior discussions which will provide you with reports of first-hand experiences.

To search old forum posts, visit

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/oldForum/

Select the PERFORMANCE forum and use the search terms "montauk" "re-power" "60".

With a light load the boat speed of a MONTAUK 17 with a properly set-up 60-HP engine should be at least 32-MPH.

In any small and lightweight boat, the performance will be very much affected by added weight. Boat speed is always a function of the power-to-weight ratio. With 60-HP, the power is limited, and added weight will have a noticeable effect on performance.

When "funds are low" a "free" engine sounds like the perfect solution.

If the motor is free, what do you have to lose?

I just read a post [elsewhere] about a c.1980 Montauk 17:
9 mpg...50 miles 5.5 gal. regular fuel ...22 mph 4.5 mph trolling 2007 Mercury 60 four stroke.

I sold on the free factor, and I know care was taken with engine.

[What is the proper engine mounting height] to use?

The proper engine mounting height for an outboard engine on a Boston Whaler classic hull generally begins at one-hole-up and can be higher. Determine the particular optimum engine mounting height for the boat, the engine, the propeller, and the general operating conditions by on-water testing. Or, alternatively, accept anyone else's advice about a specific engine mounting height.

Mount two- or three-holes up. If blind holes were used, get a jack plate and experiment with height. A 60 Bigfoot will be fine for your situation. A friend has a Suzuki 60 on his [Madetauk] and she runs 35-MPH.

Thanks for all the info.

Now I have my winter project.

I'll report performance info as soon as I get it.
