1983 Montauk 17 Re-power 100-HP

Postby philippestuebi » Sat Apr 16, 2016 2:40 am

[I] need to re-power my 1983 [Boston Whaler MONTAUK 17] and would like to install a new Mercury 100-HP FOURSTROKE [BASED ON 2.1-LITER BLOCK] [The] weight of the engine without propeller and liquids is 359-lbs.

What do you think?

In the USA, I think Brunswick is selling these Mercury-brand FOURSTROKE BASED ON 2.1-LITER BLOCK models in 75, 90, and 115-HP versions. If they have a 100-HP version it must be a model sold overseas.

The general attributes of the FOURSTROKE BASED ON 2.1-LITER BLOCK are the topic of a concurrent discussion. See

Since you mention the weight, I infer that it is the weight you are soliciting comments about. The appropriate engine weight for use with a MONTAUK has been a continual topic of discussion. There is a wide range of opinion on weight. Here are some prior discussions:

In Europe, Mercury sells the 2.1L FourStroke line as 80, 100 and 115 HP models. Yamaha does the same, the F75 and F90 models marketed and sold in the U.S. are F80 and F100 models in Europe.

If 100hp is a must, get yourself a Honda BF100. Only badged 100hp outboard available in the U.S. market.

If a Honda is a must, get the 90. The 100 requires 93 octane rated fuel.

Quick note on the Mercury 2.1L, yes it is the same block for the 75/90/115 hp models in the US. The control module to up a 75 or 90 engine into 115hp is not that expensive if you really want the top end performance. (Its a doable modification, i can't comment on what it does to warranty or liability.)

I am going on a boat test Friday on a 2.1L 90hp version mainly to see the lowest RPM it will go with troll mode.

From what I have been told from a few owners with the 2.1L 90 is the unit is solid power at all RPM's. There really are no noteable power bands that some engines have and has plenty of low end power/torque.
