1986 Outrage, E-TEC 150

Postby f8f1 » Wed May 04, 2016 1:00 pm

I am mounting a new E-TEC 150-HP engine with ICON Electronic Throttle and Shift (ETS) and ICON Pro Gauges on my 1986 Outrage 18. The new E-TEC replaces the 1986 Yamaha 150 that has been on the boat since it was new. I took a couple of weeks to pull the old engine and rigging--It’s going to live out the rest of its life on Clear Lake in California, moving an old pontoon boat around--and running the new rigging for the E-TEC and ETS. I dropped off the hull to get the new engine mounted yesterday.
My last hurdle is a propeller.

I have looked in the archives:

--Tom W Clark recommended the Stiletto Advantage in 14 ¼ x 19 – unfortunately discontinued

--also recommended were the BRP Rebel – the only Rebel 19 pitch I see is the TBX in a 15 ¼ x 19 – and Evinrude wants $678 USD for it.

--BRP Viper in 14 ¾ x 19 is still $558 USD

--Turbo 1 14 ¼ x 19: Is this prop a duplicate of the Stiletto Advantage? The price is reasonable in the $330 USD.

Are there any other recommended propellers and retail sources?

Thanks Jimh for a great resource. I don’t think I would have had as easy of a task installing the networks and the ETS if it hadn’t been for your tutorials. I have been a daily reader of your web site since my friend and dive buddy Chuck Tribolet recommended it to me in the early 2000’s.

Hi John--Thanks for the kind words about the website. Your friend Chuck Tribolet was a great participant and contributor here, and we miss his wisdom and comments.

I believe that the general problem with the STILETTO brand is that it has been withdrawn. I am not an expert on these topics, but I seem to recall that the company that was making them decided to shift their focus to a different branding of their propellers. Or maybe they were bought out by an outboard engine maker. I am fuzzy on the details. The STILETTO brand was a good value.

The Evinrude/BRP branded propellers do have impressively high list prices, and dealers do not seem to be keen to give deep discounts. I did test a REBEL propeller and found it really about the best choice, but due to the $600-price-tag, I did not change to the REBEL; the propeller I already owned (a Mercury MIRAGEplus) was working almost as well.

It sounds like a 19-pitch three-blade is the what you are looking for. I am sorry I cannot point you to a better bargain in a stainless steel propeller. If you get a chance to do some testing, you might also consider the ENERTIA propeller from Mercury. That is their latest design.

ASIDE: you will enjoy both the ICON Pro gauges and the ICON ETS controls. You will have a deluxe set-up on that OUTRAGE 18.

Thanks Jim,

Chuck left a large footprint.

Yes, a 19 pitch 3 blade stainless steel propeller seems to be the most recommended, so that’s what I have been looking to purchase.

I will look at the Enertia.

I hope this upgrade is all that I hope it will be (it cost more than I paid for the entire boat).

Here is good information about the withdrawal of the STILETTO brand of propellers; it's from a 2015 posting in our old forum:

Morning John...I repowered my 1987 GUARDIAN 18 (a little heavier than an OUTRAGE) with a new 2015 150 HO ETEC. I chose a viper prop...14-3/4x17. It rockets pretty good on takeoff, and last weekend I got 50 MPH out of it, motor loosening up a bit I think, me and the dog in it and probably 20 gallons of fuel.

I tried a 19 prop initially, RPMs too low, like 5100 then if I recall. Now it is as it should be with the 17...but my boat is heavier than yours, plus I have big T-Top with special gizmos mounted on it...I'll email you a couple photos of it.

Thanks for the information Maverick. I don’t have a T-top, just a stock OUTRAGE. My old Yamaha swung a 19” pitch propeller and most of the information I have reviewed says most others are also mounting 19” pitch propellers on new ETEC 150s with boats in my weight range. So I think that’s where I will start. What made you choose the Viper? I will definitely look into the Viper.

Hi John, I chose viper as I've used one successfully on other Whalers. Plus dealer recommended. Other brands might be good too, I went with what I knew about. I emailed you some pics for info.
